Mr Gray also covers how the British defenses evolved over time to combat the U-Boats, so that by the end of the war, the Allies had managed to dramatically reduce the effectiveness of the German submarines, although only at great cost. Although submarine warfare in World War II is what sticks out in popular memory, the German U-Boats in World War I actually sank more overall tonnage and probably came closer to winning the war for the Germans than did their World War II counterparts.

19. Enter the Americans. THIS BOOK RECOUNTS THE SECRET HISTORY OF WORLD WAR II’s Battle of the Atlantic. The struggle between Allied ships bringing supplies to Britain and German submarines seeking to sever that lifeline was the longest battle of the greatest war of all time, beginning on its first day and ending on its last. Winston Churchill has evoked its significance in words that, though familiar, still ring with high drama

Edwyn Gray (born 1927) is a British author who specialises in naval writing although at times has written short stories. He was born in London and educated at the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe. He read economics at the University of London and then joined the British civil service. His writing career began in 1953 when he started writing for magazines. His first book was published in 1969, and he became a full-time writer in 1980  . The Killing Time: the U-boat War, 1914–18 (1972). The Devil's device: the story of Robert Whitehead, inventor of the torpedo (1975). Fighting submarine (1979).

This book is extremely relevant to the game, and covers the operations of the Flanders U-boats from 1915-18. If it's down to one book, I'd go with Edwyn Gray's "The Killing Time", also published as "The U-boBYat War 1914-1918". A large hardback with many excellent illustrations, it also contains the careers of the boats that operated from Flanders. The author is also a wreck diver, and there is a section of the book about his explorations of WW1 U-boat wrecks. I highly recommend this book.

The Atlantic U-boat campaign of World War I (sometimes called the "First Battle of the Atlantic", in reference to the World War II campaign of that name) was the prolonged naval conflict between German submarines and the Allied navies in Atlantic waters-the seas around the British Isles, the North Sea and the coast of France. Initially the U-boat campaign was directed against the British Grand Fleet.

I am not sure how many histories of German U-Boot warfare from WW1 are out there, but this is a 'must have' for anyone interested in the topic or sub warfare in general or WW1 in general. The author, 'though English, treats the subject with objectivity and seems to be almost sympathetic to an enemy arm of forces that most people still look upon as murderers and pirates.

"The Killing Time: The German U-Boats 1914-1918", by Edwin A. Gray, as the title says, is a book about the German U-Boats during the first World War. Mr Gray is a British author who has published numerous works, most of which deal with submarines.

This is a fine book that covers the different types of U-Boats, how the mission of the U-Boat transformed from attacking only warships to attacking merchantmen, and how the U-Boats evolved from basically unproven curiosities to effective war weapons.

As an aside, many of the first person anecdotes included were taken (with permission) from "Raiders of the Deep: German U-Boats in World War I", a book by Lowell Thomas written over 40 years before "The Killing Time". In 1928, Mr Thomas interviewed many of the surviving top-scoring submarine aces from World War I, and put together accounts from the German side. Although it's a very uncritical book and some of Mr Thomas's facts could have used a more thorough checking, his book is a good companion to this book, offering exciting first person perspectives on many of the campaigns and events covered in Mr Gray's book.

I highly recommend "The Killing Time".

Definitely puts the reader in the conning tower. The companion volume: The Underwater War tells the story of the WW1 British sub force. Also a dashed-good read.
