Although this is listed as a children's book it is in no way childish. The depression has caused much hardship and thee Wyatt family is in particularly bad straits. The father is away working on a road building project (the only work available) and the mother is diagnosed with TB. With no money for food or rent, Isa packs her 3 siblings and all they can carry into a pram and goes in search of her father. This is a story of courage, kindness, and growth. It is told simply by Isa but it is not a simple tale.
This is the author of the delightful Phryne Fisher and Corinna Chapman books that so many people enjoy, including me. Completely different look into the effects of the depression years on people in Australia, the sadly common attitudes towards non-English immigrants, and the courage of a young girl.
I have enjoyed every book Kerry Greenwood has written, this was a beautiful story or love and courage in the face of adversity. You can live the journey with all the characters as they are so real. It is so close to the truth and a lot of people will be able to relate to that era and the hard times they all went through. Beautifully written and would read it again, and would certainly recommend it to others to enjoy the journey. Well done.
Excellent book. I love Kerry's work. I may give a copy to my granddaughter or better yet her mom so she'll think it's a grown up's book. It may not be, but it's well written and covers an area of Australian history most American's have no way of knowing.
I really liked this book because it is inspiring to girls who are 11 or 12. I have a better understanding of how people used to live during the Great Depression.
this book is somtimes prodictable and when some of the 'action' happend it wasent that dramactic

all in all if you are under 10 you might like this book.
