In 1981, the small town of Skidmore, Missouri, a man is gunned down in the middle of town while sitting in his pickup truck with his wife. While 50-60 townspeople were in the vicinity, nobody saw who did the shooting, nobody saw any guns. Then MacLean gets into the back story - how the town had been terrorized by this man for years; how he managed to eliminate and intimidate witnesses so he was never convicted of thefts, rapes, and assaults; how his family covered for him and obeyed his every command. The local police, the county sheriff, the courts, the judges all failed to protect the citizens of Skidmore. The writing is very good, and the book was compelling and hard to put down. It is a lengthy book, however, and made more so by unnecessary descriptions of crops, weather, and farming procedures. MacLean did extensive research through police and court records, as well as personal interviews with citizens of Skidmore. Fascinating story, well worth the read.

This was an interesting case and according to this book the story not only went national but I do not recall it at all. The short version is that a local guy, Ken McElroy, terrorized the town of Skidmore, MO for some 20 years and nothing was every done about it. He shot 2 people with intent to kill. They survived. Nothing was done about the first one because the local law and legal system was afraid of him. Cases would drag out for months or longer and in the interim he would threaten victims, their families and witnesses if they testified against him. He finally did get 2 years for the 2nd attempted murder and 2 or 3 of the townspeople finally had enough and shot him. This is not a spoiler. Most of this is spelled out in the first chapter. He would show up in peoples yards with guns displayed, in some cases shoot over their houses and nothing was done. I grew up in Arkansas and have lived in Texas for the last 46 years. I may be wrong but I think in either of these states some one would have killed him years ago, probably about the first time he showed up in their yards with guns displayed. The town and people were much maligned according to this book but in my opinion they finally did the only thing they could do. Again, I will emphasize that I was not familiar with the case and the only thing I know about it is from what I read in this book. The book was rather long and a bit repetitious at times. Same story over and over, MccElroy in someones's yard staring or shooting. The story was well written and the editing was good. X-Ray is activated and helps to keep up with a lot of characters.

Skidmore MO.. "Forever linked in Missouri History of a Town that saw nottin!" This is a true life story of what happened in the early 80's to at town bully who got way out of control but had a great lawyer who was crooked as a dog's hind leg. This story is one that once you begin reading, you won't want to put down until you have read the entire book. Now I am not a big book reader but was in my late 20's when this man named "Ken McElroy" a giant sized man who bullied the farm folks in and around Skidmore MO. in the N/W section of the State. It is very near Northwest Missouri State University. The town is a very simple town. One main street with shops on each side and one blinking yellow light at the L intersection. The other street that led to the town bar (who had ice cold beer by the way) is where this monster met his fate. The Police would arrest him but his lawyer got him delayed or a mistrial every time Ken McElroy went to court which was a regular thing. He killed and stole neighbors stock, raped their children, shot an old man store keeper for no reason but to bully the townspeople. Well one day the town's men got together in the town bar when Ken and one of his wives were sitting. He was a bully so he decided to leave as he saw he was outnumbered. He and his wife got in his brand new Chevy Silverado with loud pipes. Ken behind the wheel. His wife in the driver seat. All of a sudden several shots rang out of nowhere and Ken McElroy's bottom jaw bone ended up on the dashboard of his new truck. The investigation of his murder went as high as the FBI. But they were not ready for what they heard. Or should I say never to this day heard. No one saw a thing. No one ever uttered a word. Small towns like Skidmore MO., pushed to the brink, takes care of their own problems in a way we will never hear about. But one thing for sure. Push hard enough and you die without not even one witness, EVER! This happened in or around the year of 1980 and to this day, if you are a stranger in Skidmore, every eye in town is on you. So keep your mouth shut and go on about the normal days business. I not only bought this book but I am from KC,MO., about 50 miles directly South of Skidmore MO. Let's just say, I know from first hand experience, that the town bar, has beer that has a little ice on top, just the way we like it.

I remember hearing about this story years ago, and when Oprah had the family and the townspeople from Skidmore, MO on her show. What was so mind boggling about this story is how the people of Skidmore did something that most people have a hard time doing~~keeping their mouths shut!

Ken Rex McElroy was Skidmore's worst nightmare, and after all his hellish ways, bullying, shooting, terrorizing, raping and drinking and beating up on women, the town had had enough and so on July 10, 1981 they took the law in their own hands and shot and killed Ken.

If you've never read this true-crime novel, you most definitely need to add it to your list. No wonder why this book won so many awards. This is one of the most horrifying novels I've ever read, outside of the Ted Bundy story which gave me nightmares, even though I knew Ted was executed. I have to say, Skidmore did the right thing. Ken was the devil himself. Wowwwww, what an incredible story. Outstanding read for any true-crime buff!
