Read by Louis Morton. I how wish to read a book written and sponsored by the Philippine government giving the side of the Filipinos. I saw in The Sources that the late Carlos P. Romulo wrote a book entitled I SAW THE FALL OF THE PHILIPPINES (New York, 1942). I am now haunting for this. I particularly liked the portion where the Japanese landed in Lamon Bay (Atimonan, Siain and Mauban, Quezon). As a young boy, I grew up swimming and fishing in that Bay and I never know that the Japanese really set foot first in those areas during the siege.

United States Army in World War II is the official history of the ground forces of the United States Army during World War II. The 78-volume work was originally published beginning in 1946. The work describes and to a degree evaluates the ground operations of the Army in 21 volumes. Additional volumes address grand strategy; recruitment, organization, and training; the service forces; the technical services; and special studies; again almost exclusively those of the ground forces.

This work treats one of the initial campaigns of the war of the Pacific (8 December 1941 through 6 May 1942), which ended with the Japanese conquest of the Philippine Islands. The records of the victorious force, always better preserved than those of the vanquished, were at the disposal of the author, while those of the . Army that survived have been supplemented with personal documents, letters, and extensive interviews. The result is a study of decisions and operations on each side of this campaign in relation to those of the other.

Morton deals with a far more controversial subject: the Japanese landing in the Philippines, the American withdrawal to Bataan, and the fall of Corregidor. By Louis Morton and Roland G. Ruppenthal. Two further volumes in this extensive official history. Mr. Ruppenthal's study is the first of two dealing with the enormous problem of supplying material to the American armed forces in Europe.

Washington: Department of the Army, Office of the Chief of Military History, 1953. Richard L. Watson (a1).

the soldier reading these pages would do well to reflect on the wisdom of the statement exhibited in a Japanese shrine: "Woe unto him who has not tasted defeat." Victory too often leads to overconfidence and erases the memory of mistakes. Defeat brings into sharp focus the causes that led to failure and provides a fruitful field of study for those soldiers and laymen who seek in the past lessons for the future. The statesman and the informed citizen reading these pages will realize that our military means as well as our estimates and plans must always be in balance with our long-range national policy. This lesson -signposted by the battle of Manila Bay; the Treaty of Paris, signed in December 1898 when we decided to keep the Philippines; the Washington Conference of 1921-22; and the Manchurian Crisis of 1931 - we ignored before Pearl Harbor. The result was defeat on the field of battle and the loss of the Philippine Islands.

Dr. Louis Morton's THE FALL OF THE PHILIPPINES is the backbone of all books books written about the 1st Philippine Campaign of the Second World War. Well researched and documented, Morton was able to blend historical, personal, political and official military records in creating his work. No wonder it is the official US military history about the defeat and surrender on one of the largest US Army command in the Pacific.

Morton's book also gives a lot of emphasis on Military Operations in the Philippines. Among them are the North Luzon Force, The South Luzon Force, WPO III, the Withdrawal to Bataan and Corregidor, the Surrender, the operations of the Visayas and Mindanao Forces and the 14th Japanese Imperial Army. The books contains a lot of maps, diagrams, table of organizations and photographs.
A must have for those readers or researchers who would like to seek knowledge and answers about one of the greatest defeat American Arms has ever suffered.
