My unfamiliarity with Virginia Woolf's works was compensated by Miss Lee's analysis of Virginia's various literary themes and book character explanations

Only 16 left in stock (more on the way). My unfamiliarity with Virginia Woolf's works was compensated by Miss Lee's analysis of Virginia's various literary themes and book character explanations. The book moves swiftly touching all the nuances of personality that made up Virginia's private and public world. The book retained the air of the eras through which Virginia lived. The author was very discreet and never intruded on the narrative.

Hermione Lee grew up in London, and spent her childhood close to the streets, parks and buildings of Virginia Woolf's life and novels. After leaving Oxford, and lecturing for a year in America, she taught at the Universities of Liverpool and York, where she is now Professor of English Literature.

as Hermione Lee. Subscribing to Virginia Woolf's own belief in the fluidity and elusiveness of identity, Lee comes at her subject from a multitude of perspectives, producing a richly layered portrait of the writer and the woman that leaves all of her complexities and contradictions intact. Such issues as sexual abuse, mental illness, and suicide are brought into balance with the immensity of her literary achievement, her heroic commitment to her work, her generosity and wit, and her sanity and strength.

While Virginia Woolf-one of our century's most brilliant and mercurial writers-has had no shortage of biographers, none has seemed as naturally suited to the task as Hermione Lee. Subscribing to Virginia Woolf's own belief in the fluidity and elusiveness of identity, Lee comes at her subject. Such issues as sexual abuse, mental illness, and suicide are brought into balance with the immensity of her literary achievement, her.

Bed rest, even when enforced, can be a creative stimulus for the writer, argues Hermione Lee, citing a daring and eloquent essay by Virginia Woolf. The story of the body's life, and the part the body has to play in our lives, is one of Virginia Woolf's great subjects. Far from being an ethereal, chill, disembodied writer, she is always transforming thoughts and feelings and ideas into bodily metaphors. She writes with acute - often extremely troubling - precision about how the body mediates and controls our life stories. Body parts are strewn all over her pages.

Hermione Lee sees Virginia Woolf afresh, in her historical setting and as a vital figure for our times. Her book moves freely between a richly detailed life-story and new attempts to understand crucial questions - the impact of her childhood, the cause and nature of her madness and suicide, the truth about her marriage, her feelings for women, her prejudies and obsessions. This is a vivid, close-up portrait, returning to primary sources, and showing Woolf as occupying a distinct, even uneasy position with 'Bloomsbury'.

Virginia Woolf is often, even though she died nearly 70 years ago, taken as the first modern woman writer. I plan to learn to read Woolf by reading Woolf. I am now reading Mrs Dalloway (that is the work Lee speaks of most often). From Lee's biography I was left with a picture of a woman in transition. In many ways her life was very late Victorian. She clearly did not like being alone and needed to have a very large cultural and social anchor. I will read her short fiction as I can work it in and an essay occasionally.
