One Day at a Time" became Lane's biggest hit, peaking at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Chart. The single's follow-up, "Sweet Sexy Eyes", made the country top 10 the same year, becoming her final entry in the Top 10. She had a top 20 hit in 1981 with a cover of ABBA's "I Have a Dream", followed by a top 25 hit with "Love to Love You" from the same album. While serving eight months of a three-year prison sentence on bribery charges, Stoller collaborated with Pete Chaney to write Lane's biography.

This story, written by Lee Stoller with Pete Chaney during Lee's confinement at Maxwell Federal Prison Camp in Montgomery Alabama, became a multi-million seller, One Day at a Time. This biography is a compelling and captivating rags-to-riches life story of Cristy. One Day at a Time is the remarkable story of a dream and how one special woman had that indefinable quality in her voice that people universally reacted to when she sang.

Cristy Lane is best remembered for her 1979 single "One Day at a Time," a gospel song that . Married before she was 20, she had three children by 1964.

Born Eleanor Johnston but eventually adopting Cristy Lane as her professional name. her life has certainly had plenty of ups and downs. This book, written in 1982/3 by her husband Lee Stoller with Pete Chaney, deals only briefly with her childhood but does explain three major disappointments that Cristy suffered before Lee became a part of her life. One of these concerned a doll that Cristy wanted to buy, but couldn't because she was a cent short. This doll was the inspiration for one of Cristy's songs, Shake me I rattle. One of the other disappointments involved Cristy being sent home because she wasn't wearing an all-white dress that was a condition for being part of a choir. The trauma of this episode killed off Cristy's dream of becoming a singer, a dream that was only revived after Lee discovered just how brilliant Cristy is. His persistence, determination and salesmanship combined with Cristy's talent eventually made the dream come true.

Lee's efforts to establish Cristy's musical career at one point involved both of them embarking on a three-month tour of Vietnam during 1969. It should have earned them a lot of money but circumstances conspired against them and they ended up cutting the tour short. Instead of making plenty of money, they end up losing money on the tour. Also, they found that touring Vietnam didn't present them with new opportunities for Cristy in her homeland. The soldiers never forgot Cristy Lane, who risked her life on more than occasion in Vietnam, doing gigs that other entertainers refused to do One piece of trivia that has me scratching my head is where we are told that a soldier asked if Cristy knew a particular song and if so (she did), could she sing it? Fair enough, but the book says the song was Rose garden. That song was around in 1969 but only as an album track on a Joe South album. It didn't become famous until 1971. I think maybe the incident happened but that the soldier requested a different song. Still, with all that was happening in Vietnam and elsewhere, it is understandable that some small details have been misremembered.

Eventually, Lee and Cristy set up home in Nashville. After realizing that major labels would never be interested, Lee set up his own independent label, which eventually brought success. Cristy had some hit records and won an award for best new female vocalist. In retrospect, her only serious rival among the other four nominees would seem to have been Charly McClain, who consistently hit the country charts for a decade or so. Zella Lehr only had one big hit (Two doors down, a cover of a Dolly Parton song). Susie Allanson had a few but not many hits. Bonnie Tyler had a top ten country hit with It's a heartache, but that was by accident as Bonnie regarded herself as a pop/rock singer, although as a huge fan of Bonnie`s music, I wonder what she might have been able to achieve in country music if she had decided to commit herself to it, Whatever the merits of Cristy`s rivals, nobody knew then how the five nominees would fare in the years that followed. I don't think many people expected Cristy to win the award, especially as she was signed to an independent label while the others were all on major labels. Cristy's blossoming career coincided with financial problems of different kinds, but the award led to a major label contract that solved those problems.

So Cristy had finally made it, but her biggest success was with a song that was already ten years old when she recorded it, and which had met with only limited success when other artists had released it as a single in America, though a version by Lena Martell had become an unlikely number one UK pop hit in 1979. It might have been the springboard to further chart success for Cristy, but it wasn't because a cover of an Abba song (I have a dream) and subsequent singles charted but didn't do as well as they deserved to. Nevertheless, Cristy had already made her mark on country and gospel music.

This book remains in print despite being written so long ago, which must say something about the quality of it as well as the enduring interest in Cristy Lane's music. The front cover advertises a free 24-track CD, but I actually bought the book as part of a package with three CD's. Really, it was the music that I wanted but if I'd bought the CD's individually, it would have cost me more. So the book was a bonus, but I'm very pleased that it was included in that package, because it's well worth reading. At the back of the book are advertisements for some of Cristy's music, but these are clearly out of date. The music is still available, but differently compiled now. Also at the back of the book are some song lyrics (but not for One day at a time) ans some cookery recipes.

This is the first biography I ever read and found it to be very interesting. I liked Christy Lane's music so wanted to read her story and find out more about her. It is well written and is a quick read. I enjoyed it and recommend it.
