Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (28 August 1749 - 22 March 1832) was a German writer and according to George Eliot, "Germany's greatest man of letters. and the last true polymath to walk the earth. Goethe's works span the fields of poetry, drama, literature, theology, humanism and science. Goethe's magnum opus, lauded as one of the peaks of world literature, is the two-part drama Faust. It takes Goethe through childhood in Frankfort, university at Leipzig, an ensuing illness, and on to further studies in Strasburg.

Johann Wolfgang von GOETHE (1749 - 1832), translated by John OXENFORD (1812 - 1877). Johann Goethe was an interesting individual. A literary celebrity by the age of 25, Goethe was ennobled by the Duke of Saxe-Weimar, Carl August in 1782 after first taking up residence there in November 1775 following the success of his first novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther. He was an early participant in the Sturm und Drang literary movement. The Librivox recording of Volume 1 includes books one through ten. This second volume includes books ten through thirteen.
