Edward Kennedy's career comes as a stunning riposte to F Scott Fitzgerald's famous dictum that "there are no second acts in American lives". Not even the author of The Great Gatsby would have dared to invent the extraordinary life of Rose and Joe Kennedy's ninth child, the naughty boy who grew up to be the elder statesman of the Democratic party. When, in May 2008, Kennedy was diagnosed with brain cancer, his collaboration with Ron Powers took on a new purpose: "My demise did not fit into my plans," he jokes.

By Edward M.

At the end of his deeply affecting memoir, the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy writes about his grandson Little Teddy - the son of his son Medium Teddy who delivered such a heartbreaking eulogy at the senator’s funeral on Saturday - and his difficulties mastering the family tradition of sailing. The senator told the 10-year-old we might not be the best, but we can work harder than anyone, and Little Teddy stayed with it, grew eager to learn and started winning races. By Edward M.

Edward M. Kennedy is widely regarded as one of the great Senators in the nation's history. He is also the patriarch of America's most heralded family. In this landmark autobiography, five years in the making, Senator Kennedy speaks with unprecedented candor about his extraordinary life. The youngest of nine children born to Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, he came of age among siblings from whom much was expected. As a young man, he played a key role in the presidential campaign of his brother, John F. Kennedy. In 1962, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he learned how to become an effective legislator. His life has been marked by tragedy and perseverance, a love for family and an abiding faith. He writes movingly of his brothers and their influence on him; his years of struggle in the wake of their deaths; his marriage to the woman who changed his life, Victoria Reggie Kennedy; his role in the major events of our time (from the civil rights movement to the election of Barack Obama); and how his recent diagnosis of a malignant brain tumor has given even greater urgency to his long crusade for improved health care for all Americans.Written with warmth, wit, and grace, True Compass is Edward M. Kennedy's inspiring legacy to readers and to history.

As a long time admirer of anything Kennedy and with a special devotion to Ted Kennedy, I could not resist buying this book at a recent library sale. It was certainly worth the investment and was a story that I treasured. Having recently read Ted's son's Patrick book about his life, his addition and his father, it was interesting to hear the other side of the story. Patrick was not kind to his father in the telling of his story. Now, that's not to say that he was not relating his perception of the story but it put Ted in a very negative light. This book redeemed his father. Often admitting his faults and frankly at times glossing over some of the more serious incidents that have happened in his life, Ted Kennedy tells the story of his life and his family. For people who live the Kennedy's its a treasure. For those who don't, as many of the critics of this work relate it may not be of great interest.

This is a wonderful accounting of Senator Kennedy’s life. I ordered this book and received a used copy of a Biography by the Boston Globe, entitled, “The Last Lion”. I don’t read used books and I wanted this book quickly so I ordered the Autobiography from Audible.

I didn’t follow Senator Kennedy or really know about all the work he accomplished in his years in the Senate. I don’t think he omitted anything in this Autobiography. The Audible version was very enjoyable and the book was very interesting - and long. He addressed Chapaquidick. He accomplished a lot in his years in politics in spite of all the tragedy in his large family.

This book is a treasure. I enjoyed reading it from cover to cover. The writing is elegant and straightforward. The stories of personal family and friend relationships are moving. . Hearing about politics and history from a true statesman's perspective is insightful. Reading from the perspective of a Kennedy child as he grew to be the Kennedy patriarch is inspiring. I look forward to reading this memoir again. I have recommended to many peope.

I came away liking Edward Kennedy far more than I had liked him by knowing what I had read about him. Then I realized that is exactly what I was meant to feel. He is far more interesting, embracing, warm, and winning than I had credited my understanding of him to be; and what perplexed me was his frequent glossing over of the other side of the story. Of JFK, Bobby, and the incidents that shaped the rest of the family's struggles, the heroes are always the Kennedys. I believe that and strongly support that view. But I would have liked a bit of flesh on the bone.

It is a shame that we lost such a great statesman and such a noble gentleman; but this memoir doesn't paint the full picture of the events that shaped our nation, my life, and his family.

I now feel comfortable writing a review. While I’m not finished, I’m halfway through. As much as I hate what happened in Chappaqudick, I’ve been able to look at Ted with fresh eyes. His account of various conversations with his dad, mother, siblings and colleagues makes this book a real treat. He really goes into great detail about moments in his life. I felt like I was on the campaign with Jack based on the vivid details. You almost feel bad for Ted in the end. His brothers accomplished so much and he had to do so much to prove himself. He couldn't just be Ted if he wanted to. It was almost necessary for him to become the 'Lion of the Senate' in order to hold a candle next to his brothers.

I was disappointed that Kennedy didn't talk about working with his son Patrick who was a congressman. They had spent time on committees and worked together for health care reform especially for mental illness. I did enjoy learning about his childhood and some funny stories about and with his brothers Jack and Bobby.

Great story. Was never a Ted Kennedy fan, but read a lot about the family. Many, many books about different members of this family. Completely taken off that I liked this story so much. Very enjoyable and fun to read. Have a new respect for what he stood for, his art of agreeing to disagree and for putting his faults on the front line. WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR A GOOD EXCEPTIONAL READ.
