First published in 1870, Leonowens' memoir is the true story of a proper English governess who is hired by the King of Siam to tutor his many children. A very interesting story, and a great history of Siam and the Southeast Asian history. The King and I didn't do some of the complexity underlying this story justice, but this is a bit of a slow read as a result of the simple time and period its from. The book also gives a good geography of the area, and details some of the problems encountered with the King of Siam and his relationships with his Harem, his children, Mrs. Leonowens, and his subjects. You must approach it as an historical book, and realize that it pertains to the Siam of the late 1860's. 4 people found this helpful.

In 1862 Anna Leonowens accepted an offer made by the Siamese consul in Singapore, Tan Kim Ching, to teach the wives and children of Mongkut, king of Siam. The king wished to give his 39 wives and concubines and 82 children a modern Western education on scientific secular lines, which earlier missionaries’ wives had not provided. Leonowens sent her daughter Avis to school in England, and took her son Louis with her to Bangkok. She succeeded Dan Beach Bradley, an American missionary, as teacher to the Siamese court

The English Governess at the Siamese Court

The English Governess at the Siamese Court. The author recounts her adventures with the King of Siam. The king shook hands with us, and immediately proceeded to march up and down in quick step, putting one foot before the other with mathematical precision, as if under drill. Captain B slipped behind a pillar to laugh; but the king only coughed, with a significant emphasis that startled me, and addressed a few words to his prostrate courtiers, who smiled at the carpet, - all except the prime minister, who turned to look at me. But his Majesty was not to be baffled so: again he marched with vigor, and then returned to the attack with Elan.

Anna Leonowens of "The King and I" and her six years at the Court of Siam: how much of her story in popular culture is true, and how much is imagined? . That's not new, though. When Leonowens published her first book, the King of Siam responded, through his secretary, with the statement that she "has supplied by her invention that which is deficient in her memory. Anna Leonowens, in her autobiographical works, included details of her life and what was happening around her, many of which historians now believe were untrue.

Doesn't have the glamor of "The King and I", but it's easy to see where the play and movie came from. A very interesting story, and a great history of Siam and the Southeast Asian history. Wonderfully written account of Anna's experiences in Siam in the 19th. century. She is gracious in her assessment of the people of Siam she met and has no racial prejudice in what she says about the Siamese except where criticism is due such as the way the nobility treated the ordinary people. She has genuine admiration for the physical beauty of the Siamese girls despite the fact that it does not conform to the European idea of loveliness. She has also made her account very interesting in her description and has used pleasing English language. Anyone who is curious to know of how an Eastern country conducted itself while Europe was at the peak of the Industrial Revolution would get much information from this book. After reading this book it is a good idea to view the 1946 black and white movie version of the story starring Rex Harrison as the King.

I read this book because I recently saw two movies about Anna and the King of Siam and decided I wanted to know the true story. I'm very glad I did. Once you get used to the old fashioned form of writing this book is full of fascinating stories, details and facts about the King, Siam and the Siamese people.

Anna Leonowens had a very interesting adventure to tell, providing it’s true. The King of Siam of that time denied its truth, and the kings following. Because of my knowing a deposed Thailand princess, and deported to the USA, and my personal experience in Thailand, I tend to believe the story is true.
However, she writes poorly and makes her book difficult to read.

This is a fascinating story, especially for those who have seen the Hollywood versions. The authoress goes into very great detail about Siam's customs, but that adds flavour and interest to her personal story. My biggest complaint with this version is the lack of pictures, but what do you expect for free?

Quality of the physical book -- fine. Value of the content -- really interesting. Not surprisingly "The King and I" and "Anna and the King" lifted and/or created a story line somewhat based on the experiences of Anna Leonowens. Her own version is fascinating (Siam had two kings at a time, and the King of the play and movies was a complicated and definitely not romantic character). Her book gives a vivid picture of a time and place long gone. A good read.

There was something seriously wrong with this copy. It was very poorly-printed. Whoever printed the book (Hard Press Publishers) did not see fit to use any Upper-Case letters (beginning of sentences, proper names, etc.). This made the book extremely difficult to understand. This is certainly not congruent with the original manuscript, as other publishers print their books properly.
