If you are looking for any facts of the Nazi occupation of Jersey you will not find many. The author is obsessed with his bickering with a number of fellow Occupiers, occupying far too much space on these, to the detriment of the situation as regards the Occupied. When he notices the latter, at least on one occasion he evinces a mean streak of sadism which would not be out of place in a school playground.

Von Aufsess claimed, in a preface to the published diary in 1984, to have kept the diary as " a purely personal chronicle of the times, written rather for the relief of confiding to paper thoughts which could not be expressed aloud, than with the interests of the future historian in mind. Hans Philipp Werner, Freiherr von und zu Aufseß (1801–1872) was a German baron, antiquarian and founder of the Germanisches Museum in Nuremberg. Born at Castle Unteraufseß into the Aufseß noble family, he studied law at Erlangen and was employed at the courts at Bayreuth and Gräfenberg. He received his doctorate in law in 1822 and left public service, dedicating himself to the administration of the family estate and to the study of German antiquity
