In Letters to the Valley, David Mas Masumoto explores his personal memories of food and place, stories about how our food is grown, who grows it, and the suddenly changing context of family farms. These essays-in the form of letters to friends, his father, his daughter, and others-began as a monthly column for the Fresno Bee, and in them Masumoto tells us what it's like to sweat for a living; what happens when a lizard crawls up your pant leg; about holiday dinners of glazed ham and stuffed turkey, white

Sparked by an editor’s comment that "creating a good column is like writing a letter to a friend," Mas Masumoto began a column––in the form of letters to friends, to his father, his daughter, and others––that has become a regular feature in the "Fresno Bee." Heyday Books is delighted to present the collected letters here, with their original watercolor illustrations by Doug Hansen.

Celebrated by chefs and farmers, a proponent of the Slow Food movement, he touches on the themes that have won him a loyal readership––taking the time to savor precious moments and people; the value of honest work; and the importance of protecting a changing landscape and disappearing way of life––Masumoto offers what few other writers can in this day and age: a truly personal touch.

The letters are to relatives, his children, neighbors and acquaintances. Among the most poignant are letters to his parents and children relating the lessons he's learned and his hopes and fears.

A taste of "Letters" will likely leave you wanting to read more.

I grew up in the San Joaquin Valley where my family also farmed. So much of this book spoke to my memories of that rich and productive area. Those of us tied to the soil have a deep respect for farming and David Mas Masumoto certainly paints that picture for all to read.

Through letters to his dad, neighbors, friends and sons, Mas Masumoto has show us a glimps of organic farm life in California. Farm life is hard, long hours during harvest seasons under the hot Valley sun, in return, it gives little financial rewards. What makes Mas choose such hard way of life: the family tradition, a good harvest after hard labor, memory of good, delicious, mouth watering sun crest peaches, the smell of his father's shirt, or the values that he will pass on to his sons. I am not sure, but I sure taste the sweet, delicious sun crest peach and feel the joy after seeing people savoring his labor of love.

After reading this book and other books from Mas, I feel the urge to shop more organic products and help out local farmers. This is a good read for us city folks who never experience the hard life of farming and wish we also have memories of good delicious fruits picked at the perfect time, not riped from a truck.

Excellent very personal approach to life in the San Jaquine Valley. The art work integrated into the letters made the book even more enjoyable.
