A Journey by Folk Music (Science and Behavior Books)

A Journey by Folk Music (Science and Behavior Books). Mr. Darling brought folk music to people who had never heard it before, said Richie Unterberger, an author of several books on the genre. It might not have been the rootsiest folk music, but it was very enjoyable to listen to. Correction: August 11, 2008

Erik Darling, the reedy-voiced guitarist and banjo player who deftly stepped in when Pete Seeger left the pioneering folk music group The Weavers, has died after battling lymphoma. Hellerman said he couldn't put it down. Hellerman said he had been meaning to write to Darling and tell him how much he enjoyed the book. My big regret is that I didn't get to do it," he said. I did have the chance, but I didn't take advantage of it. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas in Raleigh.

Перевод текста песни Darling I Do исполнителя (группы) Landon Pigg. Darling I Do (оригинал Landon Pigg feat. Любимый, я вижу тебя (перевод София Ушерович из Санкт-Петербурга).

Darling's journey involved the formation of the Tarriers, with actor Alan Arkin, and creating the massive hit The Banana Boat Song, making the Tarriers the first group after the famous Weavers to gain worldwide fame through the singing of folk music, thus preparing the way for the Kingston Trio and all who would follow. Having been inspired by Pete Seeger and the original Weavers, life's typical twists had him taking Seeger's place in that group. Not finding the answers to his internal quest, however, he found himself leaving the Weavers, forming the Rooftop Singers and introducing the 12-string guitar to popular music through their number one hit, Walk Right In. Darling's journey was a perilous one, as anyone's journey in the arts is likely to be, given the twists of fate that can affect the art world, along with the confusion of becoming a political person, but not of the left or the right. He ended up thinking that our political answers lie in the realm of psychology, and in the idea of (just as it sounds): a University for Becoming More Fully Human. Includes a CD with 24 songs.

When you come across a person like Erik your first thought is that he was born with a gift for music. What you realize after reading this book is that his "gift" was his pluck, determination and a bit of luck to be in the right place at the right time. I was a banjo student of his and as great a musician as he was, he was a better teacher.
What I found amusing is that he taught me using tablature. I thought he was teaching down to my level, yet in the book he says that he didn't read music himself.
As a student I just went to learn to play the banjo, I wish I'd spent more time chatting with him after the lesson. RIP Erik

Great reviews have already been written. If you loved or love folk music and the early players in the revival of the 50's and 60's you will find this book and CD a treasure. I'm so glad I found this book. Two outstanding versions of "Woody Knows Nothin'" among other classics, gives you a feel for Darling's finesse and range.

Poor Erik died just a few weeks after this was published. Well written story of his time and place. And it comes with a "best of" CD.

I took guitar lessons from Erik Darling in the 70's and when I read his recent obituary in the NYT and learned that he'd just completed his autobiography I had to read it. He will best be remembered for writing and singing "Walk Right In" with the Rooftop singers, but that is only a small part of his story. Alan Arkin and DonMcLean wrote jacket blurbs for the book (Don says that Erik was "the first white person who I thought of as a guitar gunslinger"). It is a delightful recounting of Erik's life and career with wonderful anecdotes about his time with the Weavers, The Tarriers and the Rooftop Singers. He writes about his childhood in the Finger Lakes region of NY, and his bouts with anxiety and self-doubt. If you were to read this book along with the Dave Van Ronk book (MAYOR OF MACDOUGAL STREET) you'd get a very good insider view of the folk music movement of the 50's and 60's. It is unfortunate that this book wasn't published by a more mainstream publisher as it not easy to find and will probably be read by only a handful of people. What a shame. The book comes packaged with a 25 track CD which is an interesting history of Erik's music.

This is a must for anyone interested in the folk revival of the late fities and sixties..Erik Darling was an essential figure on that scene, replacing Pete Seeger in the worldwide touring folk supergroup The Weavers, He also founded The Rooftop Singers whose Number One Hit Walk Right In brought the 12 string guitar into the consciousness of a nation..Erik's sensitivity and inegrity are evident throughout this extremely self revealing work which was published shortly before his death in August of 2008..His contribution to the appreciation of folk music in America and throughout the world cannot be underestimated..A compilation CD which includes cuts from his masterpiece recording True Religon accompanies the book..Highly recommended

As a long time admirer of the late Erik Darling's body of work, I was impressed with his book. Initially I was put off by its sketchy memoir format.

It is particularly good on his times with the Weavers and the formation of the Rooftop Singers. His post post-Rooftop Singers period was a revelation as was his extended period of what I take to be depression - especially in Hollywood.

The CD enclosed is worth the price alone - and the photos are beautifully produced and rarely available.

Highly recommended for those who want a different slant to the folk years 1954-late 60s in particular.

As a 12-string guitar tragic I would have liked to learn more about his musical approach to guitar arrangements as well as his banjo style. Perhaps for another book by one of his students?

Insider narratives like this are quite rare and though it could do with editing, it's still a great read.

Having grown up in the fifties and sixties with the Weavers, Kingston Trio, Chad Mitchell etc I had not previously appreciated the contribution made by Erik Darling to the folk music of the era. Erik's book takes the reader through the times that spawned such an incredible range of performers and is sprinkled with personal stories of Erik's connections to those who have become household names among the folk world. The story of why Frank Hamilton had to remind Erik that "You'd better learn the words first" in the Weavers recording of "San Francisco Bay Blues" is typical of the human nature of his story.
He writes evocatively, bringing the time to life. On the personal level his search for meaning in his life is rather sad. But his joy in art, all art, rings true. And the CD enclosed is worth the price. As a musician, particularly a banjo player, he is unequalled.
