Stumbling on Open Ground. Love, God, Cancer, and Rock 'n' Roll

Stumbling on Open Ground. Love, God, Cancer, and Rock 'n' Roll. Ken Mansfield writes as both a cancer and music industry survivor, vividly describing the many fragments a person tries to assemble when cancer or any other personal tragedy strikes. It's tough being a Christian when hardships strike. Stumbling on Open Ground steps away from the pattern of other cancer books, Christian or secular, and attempts to tackle the question of how you can doubt a God that you do not doubt. It's about having trouble believing what is going on when you believe God knows what he is doing at all times. Mansfield, Ken (2015). Rock and a Heart Place: A Rock ‘N Roller Coaster Ride From Rebellion To Sweet Salvation. Broadstreet Publishing Group, LLC. ISBN 978-1424549993.

Rock and Roll, Cancer, and God’s Love Collide at the Crossroads of Doubt and Faith

Stumbling on Open Ground is a story of private trial and faith like those found in the books of Esther and Job. Punctuated with stories from Mansfield’s years in the music business—working with George Harrison and Waylon Jennings, among others—Stumbling on Open Ground is a private dialogue between a charismatic man, his loving wife, and the extraordinary God who transformed them both in the middle of a heartbreaking disease.

“Dealing with cancer is not as linear as most books describe the ordeal. Going into it, going through it, and coming out of cancer is not that orderly. The battle is more of a hanging on, a falling apart, a sense of loss, and a lot of lonely flailing among the rubble.”

—Ken Mansfield

Ken’s story is told in tandem with his wife, Connie. She is the enduring comforter, a co-victim of cancer whose capacity for selfless, empathetic eros comprises the human counterpart to God’s agape. This is the consummate love story of two people on a journey with God to the edge and back.

Stumbling on Open Ground is a must-read for anyone who has ever needed strength in moments of trial and doubt.

If you go through something that tests every ounce of your faith, how does it feel when it comes back with a blazing ferocity and pain beyond your ability to imagine even at the worst of your first go-round?

In the 1960s and ’70s, Ken Mansfield led what some would call a charmed life, among the beautiful people. A life many would envy. But years slipped by. Sex, drugs, and rock’n’roll can only take you so far. Beauty fades. Stars dim. Consequences of choices made in the flush of celebrity have consequences. Unwisely-spent wealth vanishes. Bodies break down.

Of Mansfield’s seemingly-blessed circles, with the Beatles and later with country music’s Outlaw movement, many are now gone and, of those gone, there were more than a few tragedies. There has been much suffering among those who thought they were invincible.

Ken’s wake-up call came in December of 1980, with the assassination of his friend, John Lennon.

It was December 1996 when his life went sideways with an unexpected diagnosis of a rare form of cancer.

In Stumbling on Open Ground, Ken Mansfield relates the pain of his battles and the beauty of his God. He made the choice from the beginning that he would trust God.

Most of us aren’t acquainted with the “brutal pain and degradation” of the treatment for his second cancer, and we don’t know the intimacy with God that can be found in the depths. In large part because we resist pain instead of accepting it – not in a fatalistic way, but as something allowed by a loving God who knows us thoroughly, is with us always, and has our true best at heart.

I found Ken Mansfield’s faith convicting. When really it’s what Christian faith is meant to be.

Stumbling on Open Ground is a worthwhile read for anyone. As well as giving us a view of the author’s experience of God in his suffering, we are offered a glimpse of what it’s like to love someone through suffering, and not be able to fix it. Each chapter after the first begins with a page by Ken’s wife Connie.

We’re all afraid to suffer, and most of us try to avoid it at all costs. When life is uncomfortable we tend to blame God. A crisis can remind us to turn to Him, but when we do so we expect Him to fix it, to make us feel better. We don’t want to meet Him there, and sit with him there; we want Him to take us out of it and set us back on our way.

We want comfort more than we want God.

In the blistering heat of the battle, when he could do little more than lie still and let God and the chemicals fight, Ken Mansfield found the deeper comfort of being held by God within intense suffering.

If you know someone going through cancer and treatments, this is a must read. Ken has written so honestly and sometimes humorously about what it is like to go through cancer and the treatments, as well as how his wife has experienced it. My husband read it first, having recently had so many "side effects" of the treatments, and said he identified with so many things Ken said and saw more about what a spouse/loved one/caregiver goes through. His open confession of faith in God and comparing cancer as the "little c" and Christ as the "big C" were especially encouraging.

Written with such heart and transparency with a warm personal style. Truly inspirational. I recently gave a copy to a Christian friend who has gone into remission. She loved it and felt blessed by Ken Mansfield's story.

It is always interesting to hear how someone handles the adversities they are faced with in life. Ken is very open about his search for answers to challenges and it was uplifting to see he found a deeper faith through his battle with cancer.

Mr. Mansfield's writing style is often touching, always insightful, and brings to light the very human side of all of us. I am so very grateful he is willing to share his faith, his journey, and his love for life (and his wife, Connie). Thank you!

Well written, and easy to read. Keeps your attention throughout the reading.
I'm not through with it yet, and Ive already ordered 3 more for my pastor and some friends. Ken and Connie take you through the nightmare of being told you have cancer - and through the medical system which can run the gamut from being helpful and caring to the patient being a number and just another case. All along the way, Ken, who is "The Goto Guy" when it comes to dealing with life, is encountering a loving caring God who is telling him to for once let go, and Let Him. This is something he isn't used to doing.

This book comes from the heart. Its the real thing - something truer and more honest than most of what we encounter in this life. I'm in awe and moved by the sincerity and the message.

If you have or ever had cancer it is life shattering. Even being told you might have cancer is a show stopper and a strange trip through the medical system (Ive been there). I recommend this book to anyone who is anywhere along that path - I recommend it to anyone who has any kind of chronic or serious illness and I recommend it to you, who may not have any problems in life right now. Get this book, no, get a couple 3 copies and give them to people you care about. This book isn't about the Fiscal Cliff, the Middle East, or anywhere else, its not about whats on the Web, Radio, or TV now. Its about us, what we are doing here, and why. Most of all its about who put us here.
