In James McCarthy's book, "The Gospel According to Rome", he presented the Catholic position in a very straightforward manner, then challenged it with his interpretation of specific Bible verses. Unfortunately, in "Conversations with Catholics" it seems like all bets are off, and if you don't believe what he believes, then you must not be a Christian. The best illustration of this for me was when he met Sr. Teresa on a bus trip across Ireland.

Conversations With Catholics book.

A great little book with many suggestions on how to share God's plan of salvation with Catholics.

Be aware though that the exact same book was published by Harvest House Publishers in 2005 under the title, "Talking with Catholic Friends and Family: Understanding How They Think and Feel, Why They Trust in Tradition, What the Bible Teaches."

Interesting and informative. It explained a lot of differences in detail. Enjoyed the book and would recommend
it if you have any questions and have an interest to be better informed about Catholicism.

I actually became a believer as the result of an RC "Cursillo" retreat. So, I do believe there are sincere followers of Messiah in the RCC, sincere but in many ways unenlightened.

One day in a secular bookstore I saw Conversations With Catholics, had no clue what it was about, but felt led to buy it. After finishing that book I could never go to another mass. Interestingly, this book, though it tells many outrageous practices and beliefs coming out of the Vatican, does not reveal some even more outrageous facts about that institution. If anyone wants to see those I recommend Walter Veith's videos (free on Youtube and elsewhere on the net), and particularly where he shows the strong similarities between islam and the RCC, maybe even an historical connection. (Google a picture of a former Pope kissing the Koran, a book that asks Allah to destroy Christians.)

I had been studying the Bible a lot before I saw this book. That practice has been the end of folk's RCC faith many times. The thing that got me the most was reading in the book how some priests are still saying "We offer up this living sacrifice" over a little piece of bread that has supposedly turned into Messiah. I thought, "Who the hell do they think they are to offer Him up for anything?" I knew, too, that the Bible tells us He DIED ONCE FOR ALL. Let's see, now, who offered Him up to die anyway? His friends? Or His enemies?

Anyone who reads this book has to see that the RCC conflicts, majorly, with the Bible. They can pick which one they want to follow. I absolutely pick the Bible over any traditions of men and thank the author of this book for helping me to see through some of them.

This author is lazy. There are compelling explanations to every single of his objections, but instead he punts to fallacies, such as “Catholics don’t take sin seriously.” It’s a really insulting book. If you’re going to be anti-catholic, at least put effort into explaining REASONS rather than attacks.

The book is structured in such a way that each chapter is an entity in itself. But each chapter has a different focus on a unique doctrinal belief or practice of the Roman Church. The author uses a testimony of the experiences of individuals and the problems they had with the Roman Church. The major Roman doctrine or practice is then briefly highlighted and critiqued with the applicable Scriptural viewpoint. A good easy to read presentation of some of the unique Roman Church doctrines and practices that will give one a general understanding of both basic Christian doctrine and the traditions of the Roman Church from which these unique beliefs evolved.

Even among evangelicals and fundamentalists, the usual anti-catholic crew are finding that they have lost all credibility. Combine his inability to write a proper sentence, with intellectual dishonesty, and lack of any worth while scholarship, this book proves once again that anti-catholics have no business speaking about or judging the Catholic faith. They are not qualified. The author contradicts himself throughout this book and shows that he lacks even a very basic understanding of the Catholic faith. Sure, fundamentalists can continue to sustain themselves in their own little closed circle, refusing to have their claims examined, refusing to engage in discussion and think with intellectual honesty, but they will continue to ever be taken seriously by the Catholic community, and much less, by the academic community. This book is an insult to people who do real work in theology and biblical studies, both Protestant and Catholic alike.
