The Grace of Law book.

The Grace of Law book. He has over 1600 footnotes in a little under 300 page book This is by far the best survey book of what the Puritans believed on the topic of "Law and Gospel". Kevan wrote this book in 1964 but with the confusion sweeping Christianity all across on this topic, this book is just as relevant today as it was back then, and much more needed.

In this study, Ernest Kevan investigates the works of numerous seventeenth-century theologians to provide an overview of a Puritan understanding of the law in relationship to the life of the Christian. After describing the Puritans and the antinomian controversy that developed among them, Kevan demonstrates how the orthodox view among the Puritans regarded the moral law as an expression of God s majesty established as a guide for man s blessedness and a measure to expose sin. He then proceeds to show how the law relates to God s people after the fall in the context of the covenant of grace. Great care is used to explain the relation of Christ s work to the law, the ongoing moral obligation Christians have to the law, the idea of gospel obedience, and the Christian s freedom from the law s condemnation. Although the Puritans saw law and grace as opposing principles regarding one s justification, they did teach about how God ultimately uses the law in the life of the believer for His gracious purposes.

A good reference work on the thoughts of the puritans. Each chapter is set up to answer a specific aspect or question on the discussion of Grace and Law. It goes well with Sinclair Ferguson's book, The Whole Christ, which follows the Marrow Controversy in Scotland. I would recommend "The Whole Christ" first as a better book, but this one has great reference material.

Essential reading for those interested in getting beyond the modernist secular caricature to understand the role law continues to play for Christians and unbelievers alike.

As described. Recommend!!

If someone says that we are not under law but under grace, how do you reply? This book will help sort out the issues of God's moral law, to show that in fact it does still place demands upon the Christian today. If you like reading the Puritans, you will enjoy this book to gain an insight into how they viewed the law. God's grace and God's law are one in the same thing and you will better understand that through this book. If you want to know what the law demands and what it was never meant to accomplish, then you should get this and study.

One of the best books to know who the Puritan was!
