Preaching and Preachers book This is a topic that I have felt uneasy about even when I was not a Christian.

Preaching and Preachers book. Lloyd-Jones covers multiple facets, from the supremacy of preaching to the character of the preacher; from the preparation of the sermon to the pitfalls every preacher should avoid. Above all he stresses that without the anointing of the Holy Spirit and the favor of God, one’s time and labor over a sermon are in vain. This is a topic that I have felt uneasy about even when I was not a Christian. The following quote really stuck out to me: "I go on to assert as my tenth point that no sinner ever really ‘decides for Christ’.

For over 30 years, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones ministered at Westminster Chapel in London

For over 30 years, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones ministered at Westminster Chapel in London. Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones was a physician who left medical practice to become a church minister. In his day, he was one of the most respected preachers in Britain. In Preaching and Preachers, he states his attitudes about his role in the church and explains his methodology, all the while addressing various problems and questions that have been put to him.

In his book Preaching and Preachers, Zondervan, 1971. Lloyd-Jones' preaching style was therefore set apart by his sound exposition of biblical doctrine and his fire and passion in its delivery. Lloyd-Jones describes his views on preaching, or what might be called his doctrine of homiletics. In this book, he defines preaching as "Logic on fire. He is thereby known as a preacher who continued in the Puritan tradition of experimental preaching. A famous quote on the effects of Lloyd-Jones' preaching is given by theologian and preacher J. I. Packer, who wrote that he had "never heard such preaching.

A classic from one of the most dynamic preachers of this century! Originally delivered as a series of lectures, Lloyd-Jones's essays capture the essence of powerful preaching. His insights on the shape and preparation of the sermon, the preacher's relationship to the congregation, and more will give you much to ponder as you write your next sermon.

Dr Martin Lloyd-Jones was a qualified physician who, in 1927, left medical practice and became a church minister in South Wales. His books include PREACHING AND PREACHERS and the GREAT DOCTRINES SERIES. He then became Minister of Westminster Chapel, London, a position he held for thirty years until his retirement in 1968. Every preacher should believe strongly in his own method; and if I cannot persuade all .

Every preacher should believe strongly in his own method; and if I cannot persuade all of the rightness of mine, I can at least stimulate them to think and to consider other possibilities. I can say quite honestly that I would not cross the road to listen to myself preaching, and the preachers whom I have enjoyed most have been very different indeed in their method and style. But my business is not to describe them but to state what I believe to be right, however imperfectly I have put my own precepts into practice.

I found this book to be a great help for myself as a layperson who prepares sermons for a jail ministry. A great insight and practical know-how on sermon preparation and also how to prepare the man himself

I found this book to be a great help for myself as a layperson who prepares sermons for a jail ministry. A great insight and practical know-how on sermon preparation and also how to prepare the man himself. Most of what goes on today in the church would not pass the bar in his view and he gives solid reasons for his position. Time well spent in reading this book, a must for all in the ministry or considering even a small group. The good preachers held to some basic principles and this book tells how and why. There are some books a pastor or other teacher should read multiple times, and this is definitely one of them. Dr. Lloyd-Jones lived an amazing life, giving up a medical career that had him already serving members of Parliament in his mid-20's. He went to Wales with his new wife, herself a young doctor, and they ministered several years before being called to London's Metropolitan Tabernacle.
From before WWII and well beyond, he came to be known as Britain's finest Bible expositor. He was a serious man, and a magnificent expository teacher: 117 sermons in Acts, 232 in Ephesians, 254 in John, 366 in Romans, and so on (see the Martyn Lloyd-Jones Trust online).
This book, from his teaching, I think, in an American seminary late in his life, is the chance for every Bible teacher to hear what a great teacher and dedicated pastor thinks about how to preach, as well as different types of preachers--their mistakes and successes.
It is a gem, given by God to make us better by listening to someone who humbly but brilliantly served his Lord and impacted the world for Christ.

The Doctor at his best! This is a warm and encouraging book for preachers. Dr. Lloyd-Jones delivered these lectures at Westminister Seminary in the sixties (I think), but they are still relelvant today for the preacher that is serious about his calling. Lloyd-Jones defends the primacy of preaching, showing that there is not any substitute for it. He delves into the preparation, shape, and form of the sermon and hits on such issues as humor, invitations, and the congregation. Best of all is the last chapter on "Demonstration of the Spirit and of the Power" which deals with the sacred anointing of the Holy Spirit in preaching. I am a preacher and if I could have only one book on preaching, this would probably be the one!

A book that reinforces the importance of preaching God's word as well as the sacredness of the pulpit. The platform God has provided should be respected and used to present God's word to his people. God told Peter to feed his sheep. The pulpit is one of the tools that God provides as an avenue. Great book.

While I believe that many of the issues within the church that he pointed out are true, his antidotes are outdated. His blaring sexism was hard to take. I had to keep reminding myself of the age of Dr. Lloyd-Jones and the era from which he was writing. Also, that this frame of thought is still accepted by many today.

As Paul was in his day, with an ability to preach, teach, guide, stabilise and strengthen to maturity God's precious young children; So also is Dr Martyn Lloyd Jones to our modern day!

If you are God's child, you'll hear God voice loud and clear in any written book or sermon audio by this great and humble servant of God, the very dear Dr Martyn Lloyd's Jones.

God bless you as you read this great work!

This book by Dr Martin Lloyd-Jones is recommended for all Christians who are in the preaching field or at least in a leading role in the church as a teacher. The book is very informative and easy to understand, and the material is presented in an orderly fashion that makes every topic interesting and well worth the reading. It's a very good book!

This is an excellent book. It is really a compilation of a series of lectures in book form. A must read for anyone who aspires to preach. Dr Lloyd-Jones was a great expositor and this work really shows his heart and mind on the subject of preaching.
A brilliant preacher who was much a student of preaching as he was the most insightful preacher in the 20th century.
