Quick of mind and strong in spirit, Esther refuses to suffer the fate of her harem sisters and boldly challenges Xerxes to give of his heart before taking his pleasure, thus sealing her place beside him as queen.

The book 'Chosen' by Ginger Garrett is a multi-layered retelling of the story of Esther. Esther is the enigmatic queen whose book in the Hebrew Bible holds the distinction of being the only one that never mentions God. Despite the absence of divine reference, it is an incredibly important story about the preservation and faithfulness of the people of Israel. Garrett begins with a series of newspaper articles, which set a context for the 'discovery' of scrolls of personal diaries of Queen Esther, preserved in what is now Iran for nearly 2500 years.

Author Ginger Garrett entertains us with the Bible classic, The Story of Esther. This is the adult version of what many of us read as youngsters; Bible Tales for Young Children. If you are thinking of buying this for an impressionable child or teen, it may not be an appropriate choice. Think of it as you would a movie rated 'R'. There is the taking of a girl from her home against her wishes; her development into a sexual toy for the king; and violence.

That said, I enjoyed Garrett's portrayal of Esther. She wove history and a modern version of what we know into a delightful account of historical fiction. She is adept at writing realistic dialogue. Her settings are vivid enough to be the visual backdrop of the story she sets before us. Garrett's research helps create a story that's both realistic and believable.

So, yes, you'll know the end before you read it, but the reading of this tale is so enjoyable.

I bought this and another Ginger Garrett novel, which I read first. I didn't love it, so I was then reluctant to pick this one up. But it sounded like something I'd love, so I kept it. This is just another great example about how you shouldn't always give up on an author after trying only one of their books. There is a lot to love about Chosen. The first-person narration feels very real and is emotionally engaging. The plot, while not a surprise to those that are familiar with Esther's story in scripture, still has a fresh feeling to it, and the historical details make this story shine. Esther's preparation for her meeting with the king, her companions (a handful of trusted eunuchs and one female assistant), as well as the rivalries of the harem are brought to life in this story, replete with descriptions of the opulence within the palace. My only complaint is that there were times that I felt like things were glossed over, but it also felt authentic to the idea that this was Esther's diary and parts of it may have been destroyed or lost over time.

The frame of the story is narrative of the discovery of artifacts that originated in ancient-Iran. Interspersed throughout the diary are news articles, as well as commentaries on the diary and Esther herself from contemporary scholars. It's a really neat way to tell the story, as well as look at it's implications for the modern day. Many of the things that Esther and her contemporaries had to deal with are not that different from today. Girls and women in many parts of the world are still marginalized and treated as property. Human trafficking still exists. And while Esther could not do everything for all people, she did what she could, where she was, and whether you believe in the literal application of the scriptural story or not, that is still a valuable thing to cling to now.

I think the only reason this didn't elicit five stars from me is that I knew this story, so there was a certain lack of urgency on my part that has nothing to do with how well the story is crafted and everything to do with my prior experience as a reader. There is an unexpected twist toward the end, but the build-up wasn't really there for me, so it didn't have a big emotional impact on me. What struck me the most was how hard it must have been for Esther to 1) be torn away from the only family she had, Mordecai, never to see him again, and 2) to constantly hide her faith for fear of death. I knew that about her story, but this book really brought those things into sharp relief. The story isn't cutesy or sweet, but about a real woman in an impossible situation, in a place filled with deceit and hatred because of what she achieves. Her heartache over the loss of her former life, and her attempts to constantly seek God despite her circumstances were the most winning aspects of the story for me.

I look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.

The books by Ginger Garrett are great!! I originally bought these in hopes of reading them with my daughter to make the bible come alive. Very glad I read them first alone. I would NOT recommend these to young women. The material is just too sensitive.

That said - I wish her books were not over! I want to still be reading! What amazing books truly elaborating on the bible stories making them so much more than the chapters we tend to skim of the Old Testament. I couldn't wait to read the bible again to see exactly what parts of the books were in there. This author did an amazing job at keeping with scriptures but elaborating to make a great story. Making it come alive.

Oh I did find myself skimming her news articles or skipping them. I know they were to make the content more believable as lost diaries but I enjoyed the story and didn't really care about that part.

I was very disappointed in the way I bought it though. I bought it used like new condition. My copy was very worn and writing all through it. This was all I was not pleased about. The book content itself was amazing.

The premise for the novel was interesting-a peak in to how Esther may have thought and felt as the events of her life unfolded. I also realized that due to this, some liberties would need to be taken to fill in all the blanks. What was her life like before her being chosen? What was her relationship like with the king? Etc. Garrett succeeded in filling in those blanks with an interpretation that gave Esther depth and dimension.

I gave 4 instead of 5 stars because there were many times strong feminist tones were present and I found those distasteful. While history does show that the culture treated women differently then compared to now I felt like a feminist agenda was being shoved at me rather than simply weaving in the reality of that time into the story.

I got this one awhile back as a free Kindle book, and was pleasantly surprised. Unlike a lot of what is considered Christian fiction, and most notably in contrast to the Hadassah book that was popular enough to spawn a movie several years ago, this one doesn't shy away from issues like the realities of life in a harem, or the conflicts a woman might feel when taken from her commoner life and placed in such a setting. The diary format worked well, and the historic details added in the footnotes were useful in giving additional insight into what is a familiar story for me.
