As a Progressive Christian, I know how hard it can be to pin us down because we are such a varied group. Delwin Brown does an admirable job. I passed it on to my mother who is an 80 year old Mainline Christian and she was surprised by how much she related to the theology.

The introduction was slow reading, but gave a good background for streams of American Christian thought. There were some interesting ideas--in particular that of a vulnerable God rather than an all powerful and all controlling one. Very good in encouraging consideration of different views and approaches to religion--in order to strengthen understanding and faith. I think this is a good book for those who believe but have trouble reconciling that with what they hear in church. Pretty good attempt to balance criticism of the literal Christian right wing and the loose views of the Christian left. Still radical enough that I think there was a time when Brown would have been burned at the stake.

It is so refreshing to read a well researched book on religion that anyone can comprehend. So many are pretentious (even when the authors don't intend to do that I fear.)

Thank you!

I came across this book because its author and I share the same first name--Delwin. Since the book is about a subject I'm interested in I purchased it even though I didn't really know what I'd find. I'm glad I did. Call it whatever you like I found his book to be a clear and lucid discussion of the real gospel as taught by Jesus.

Over the past several decades it has become increasingly clear that traditional Christianity has lost touch with the real Jesus. This book is a welcome breath of fresh air in a world where religion has increasingly been used for economic and political advantage.

Full disclosure: Brown was a relative. I read every word avidly though, because Brown was not just playing tourguide to the modern perspectives of "incarnated" theology. He also gave an introduction to the reasons why these perspectives make sense, and to the implications of this common-sense revolution in theology.

This book clarifies what I have been feeling about my Christian beliefs. We are using this book in our church to have a lecture discussion group which meets monthly. The author is very clear about delineating the differences in the beliefs among Christians.

I grew up in a Pentecostal church . I always had doubts and misgivings about what I was being taught. Slowly, I have come to see the Evangelical traditions as repressive and dark. This book takes my conclusions to a new level while lighting a new path to Divinity thru Christ that resonates as pure and holy again.

It was mythical journey that took me through childhood to who I am today. It is amazing the growth of faith as one seeks an active life in the pursuit of justice. Dr. Brown articulated much of what my thoughts are and I felt confirmed in my journey of faith.
One of the best books I've read that provide guidance and clarity in a religious atmosphere driven by fear and confusion and emotionalism. I am very grateful to have purchased this book and to find solace in not only the style but in the clarity of the content, and the detail provided.
