A Thousand Years Ninetails summary: In a city that is neither small nor big, there's a mountain that people avoid. The undeveloped mountain isn't protected with a green belt nor is it a site of environmental conservation. With the dismal atmosphere and the rumors that whisper about the spirits, let it to be called Spirit Mountain. On the mountain there's a house, a famed house of mediums that shows off their long glorious history of their heritage. Hence, it was once called Medium Mountain. But once, a long time ago, they said a Ninetails lived.

Ten Thousand Years of In. Archaeology of Wealth.

Many silent and forgotten voices are brought to life in this volume which presents the accumulated wisdom of women mystics, theologians, spiritual directors, poets, visionaries, mothers and activists over eleven centuries. The writers include a range from the 4th century Egeria of Spain to 20th names such as Simone Weil, Evelyn Underhill and Dorothy Day. Their concerns are broad ranging and they reflect on: Prayer, Family life, a woman's lot, suffering, comfort and consolation, women's ministry and its restrictions and more. All these varied voices are linked by a common thread: in every age women have sought authentic spiritual self expression. This anthology is an inspiration for all women today who are seeking opportunity to define and realise their charisma.

I was recently reading a most insightful article in the magazine Spirituality & Health - one of the very few publications that I always read from cover to cover. In an interview with the English-born Buddhist nun Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo, she was asked whether there is a glass ceiling in the spiritual world. Her response was that there certainly can be, and she has done much to make enlightenment accessible to Buddhist nuns. I was thinking about some of her observations as I read this anthology. Over the centuries the spiritual and in particular the mystical insights of many female writers have shown a degree of compassion and a depth and character that sometimes seems to missing in the writings of some of the male writers of the same periods.

Undoubtedly some of the differences are social, but I suspect that there may be more to it than that: though this is a huge generalization, men and women do seem to apprehend and speak about the world differently, and their spiritual experiences can also be different. For someone with a Y-chromosome it can be very enlightening to learn about the spiritual world from a female perspective.

The writings in this collection are very well chosen and arranged by sixteen topics rather than authors. For instance, "Cosmic Christ and Natural World" and "Life's Journey and the Passage of the Soul." The authors are all from the European traditions and range from the ninth to the twentieth centuries, and there were certainly one or two whom I did not know. It is inevitable that anyone reading the book will mourn the absence of a favorite writer, but will likely be more than satisfied by the ones who are here.

Knowing how hard it has been for many women to get their material accepted and published, and the rough treatment of people like St. Teresa of Avila - who is featured in this collection - I was left wondering how many insights and hidden treasures never saw the light of day.

Very highly recommended.

This small book (only 212 pages)is a marvelous anthology collecting women's writing from early sources up through modern writers. These include an early Carolingian mother, Marjory Kemp, Julian of Norwich, St. Therese, Dorothy Sayers, and many, many writers from many different faiths, writing on the subject of faith and values. This isn't a book really to sit and read straight through, but rather one to keep for spiritual reading, slow consideration. It is an absolutely wonderful source for me to discover authors I hadn't known about previously.

This is a lovely piece of scholarship that will appeal to many readers who have an interest in the spiritual life. I highly recommend it.

I already cherish this book and will return to it as much and as often as I need to. Highly recommended.

This was a gift, and I am hopeful that the recipient will enjoy it as much as I meant it to! It appears to be exactly what I wanted for her.

Felicity Leng's book is an anthology of spiritual writings by women of note including Dhuoda (9th Century), Hildegard Of Bingen, Theresa of Avila, Christina Rosetti, Emily Brontë and even Mary Baker Eddy. These women were all mystics of some kind and the anthology contains their thoughts on subjects such as truth and simplicity, suffering and death, creativity, visions, joy, heaven and more.

It's not a book to read straight through but serves more as a resource to be dipped into. There is a short biography of each of the women at the end of the book but I did feel this collection was somewhat disjointed with just a short introduction to each passage and little reflection and interpretation of what I was reading.

I love the premise of this book -- gathering spiritual women's writings throughout the ages to meet in one place. Felicity Leng has accomplished something both fascinating and beautiful. This book is thoughtfully written, the author's careful research evident.

However, that is my one criticism with this book: it is written as if it were a thesis. As an example, to describe each writer, the author uses complicated verbiage and verbosity -- instead of writing pure and direct sentences.

Overall, this is a treasure of a book.
