This is a book of talks given by Cardinal Basil Hume when he was an Abbot. They mostly pertain to religious life but lay people, who live in any community (you have to be alone on mars in a cave with your hands over your ears not to)can gain very nice insights from these talks.

by George Basil Hume. This is a great book for those seeking insights into their personal vocations. Hume addresses a Benedictine novice in this book but many of the lessons that he speaks of can be applied to other walks in life, including married life and the single life. Clearly this is most relevant to a . audience but I think others can read and relate to most of it without too much difficulty.

George Basil Hume OSB OM (2 March 1923 – 17 June 1999) was an English Roman Catholic bishop. He was a monk and priest of the English Benedictine monastery of Ampleforth Abbey and its abbot for 13 years until his appointment as Archbishop of Westminster in 1976. His elevation to cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church followed during the same year. From 1979, Hume served also as President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales

I can't add more to the praise for this book than others have done. It's a shame it is out of print and so hard to find.

One correction to Amazon's description: This is a PAPERBACK book. I was disappointed in receving my used copy which I purchased through Amazon Marketplace. I was about to request a refund from my seller until I noticed it was Amazon, not my seller, who made the error. Please don't be disappointed if you order this used and receive a paperback copy.

This is a great book for those seeking insights into their personal vocations. Hume addresses a Benedictine novice in this book but many of the lessons that he speaks of can be applied to other walks in life, including married life and the single life. Clearly this is most relevant to a R.C. audience but I think others can read and relate to most of it without too much difficulty. His style is personable and conversational -- uncommon for authors of his caliber.

The Intentional Life is a selection of short talks given in the 1960s and 70s by a Benedictine abbot to the monks in his charge, on the topic of living their monastic vocation... as though the reader were a fly on the wall in the monks' Chapter Room. It begins with a talk on "man and God" and one on "the monastic instinct," followed by monastic formation talks to novices, to monks making their simple and solemn professions, to monks becoming priests, talks given on the occasion of renewal of vows, and finally talks about monastic work--for instance Ampleforth Abbey ran a boys' school.

Benedictine life is profoundly about being in community, and these monks blend contemplative and active life in a way that is somewhat relatable for people living "in the world," though indeed with an emphatic intentionality and discipline (through vows, rule, obedience, schedule, etc). A good monk chooses this life freely and lives it with love and integrity. The guidance given in the book is of a practical and exhortive nature. It is about the ordinary fabric of the monk's life--full commitment, humility, the great importance of prayer, obedience and keeping one's vows and rule of life, etc.

"The Intentional Life" is not a basic explanation of life at the monastery nor is it soaring mysticism. And it isn't written specifically to make monastic wisdom relevent and interesting for laypeople. But thoughtful readers serious about deepening their spiritual lives through greater whole-life commitment may find some very human yet soulful insights into what works for that and why and how.

While this is an excellent book on the Benedictine Way, this is only one part of the original version of Cardinal Hume's book, "Searching for God". If you can look very carefully and get a copy of the original (old new edition),Searching for God,Searching for God as published by Hodder, you will get more of his excellent teaching.

It is a great pity, also that this book is published either with the original title or with the new title "The Intentional Life - The Making of a Spiritual Vocation", both of which are misleading in that they are stripped down versions of the original as published by Cardinal Hume. The new publishers have done us all a great disservice.
