As I’ve noted, Sertillanges’ book is a devotional on Christ’s passion, taken from the perspective of Christ looking out hanging from the cross. Sertillanges identifies the sights and sounds, the events of Christ’s last days, Christ’s friends and His enemies, His last words, and what all this sound and fury was about. I recommend this book to everyone! This describes what Jesus saw from the cross, his crucifixion, & His love for us from the beginning to infinity. The descriptions are beautiful & the words are powerful & will leave a lasting impression on the reader. Mar 06, 2018 Mary rated it really liked it. I enjoyed this book.

What Jesus Saw from the Cross is a spiritual work that drew upon the time Sertillanges spent living in Jerusalem. Certain of Sertillanges' works are concerned with political theory, with French identity and the structure of the traditional French family. La vie héroïque, Third Series, 1916, esp. pp. 166-184. Sertillanges (an acclaimed scholar and Catholic Priest) finds historical precedents for such events as the soldiers dressing Jesus as a mock king and casting lots for his clothes. Never has there been spiritual reading as powerful as What Jesus Saw from the Cross, the book that will intensify your love of Jesus by burning the events of His Passion into your memory and imagination. Sertillanges asks us now to look at the figure upon the Cross. To look at the head bowed, the bloodied wood upon which is fastened the battered body. He will also ask us something else, something unusual: to ‘change places’, in our imaginations at least, with that crucified figure.

Never has there been spiritual reading as powerful as What Jesus Saw from the Cross, the book that will intensify your love of Jesus by burning the events of His Passion into your memory and imagination.

Written early in this century by Rev. A. G. Sertillanges, a priest who lived in Jerusalem, this acclaimed devotional classic gives you vivid and dramatic details not included in the Gospel: With Jesus, you'll be jostled by crowds as you enter Jerusalem, choke on the dust of the narrow streets, experience the exotic oriental smells of the city at festival time, share the Last Supper with the disciples, stare into the face of Jesus' accusers, and be there as He dies on the Cross.

Do you remember when Jesus begged His disciples to "watch one hour" with Him in the Garden of Gethsemane? With this book, you can watch not just one but many hours with Jesus.

Read it slowly and prayerfully. The vivid details and the gripping narrative will soon take over: you'll find yourself engaged in a personal retreat, an interior pilgrimage, and a profound meditation on the love and sufferings of Jesus on the Cross.

From Christ's Cross, you'll:

Recall with Him the history of His people, while gazing lovingly on Mount Zion the "City of David" cradled within the walls of Jerusalem Search the faces in the crowd below, finding there the malice of enemies, the dismay of friends, and the indifference of so many others Find comfort in the tender love revealed in the sorrowful face of His Blessed Mother Look across Jerusalem to the Mount of Olives, the road to Bethany, the Upper Room, the Garden of Gethsemane . . . and remember with Jesus the holy deeds He performed in each of these places Recall the forty days in the desert, the marriage at Cana, the baptism by John, the calling of the Apostles, and the other events of His holy ministry, now brought to fearful consummation on the Cross.

It was so moving. The perfect book to read over the course of Lent. It gave me a totally new perspective on the Passion and Death of Jesus. Hard to read at times because it made me realize the part my sins have played in the necessity of Him having to redeem all of us by such a gift. Sometimes it's too easy to blame those who were alive at the time and forget our part in it. At one time or other I believe we have all yelled "Crucify Him" by our thoughts and/or actions. I feel an even deeper gratitude for this gift of Salvation as this book really brought it home to me.

Requires very quiet, contemplative reading. Fr. Sertillanges explores or tries to explore Christ's vision as the God-man from the cross, not just the more 21st century version - the Suffering Servant.

I have found this different method of covering the crucifixion of Jesus very helpful in getting a better understanding of the pain suffered by Jesus. His agony caused by the vicious abuse heaped on Him by His tormentors was extreme. It is a wonder that He survived the abuse to make it to the actual crucifixion. Anyone who reads this book will be grief stricken over our Lord's suffering for us. It was caused by the sins of all of us.

Father A. G. Sertillanges lived in the Jerusalem area for many years. Because of his knowledge of landmarks, he places the reader into the eyes of Jesus as they sweep over the Jerusalem landscape from His vantage point on the Cross. As His eyes touch on the individual points of interest such as the Cenacle (sight of the Last Supper) Fr. Sertilanges has Jesus recall the events that have taken place and the words that were said in that spot. He draws upon the Gospels and also his own imagination of what Jesus is thinking as He recalls each event. It is truly a remarkable way of looking at the last days of Jesus and His last hours on the Cross. I read this book as part of my Lenten devotions for 2014 but think it would be beneficial to anyone seeking to strengthen their faith at any time of the year. It would also be a great book to be read by a Scriptural book club. It has my most highest recommendation.

Reading this book gave me a whole different perspective on the crucifiction! Eye-opening and inspiring! Felt the humanness of Jesus in His love and forgiveness for people. The first chapter was difficult to get through though, glad I persevered.
Scream_I LOVE YOU
One of my favorite books, a unique perspective of what Jesus saw from His Cross and what thoughts he may of have. Sertillanges is a gifted writer and has mystical insight, for a person way below his intelligence he wrote so even I can have deeper thoughts, a wonderful book

I'll admit that it was tough getting through the first few chapters. It was wordy and hard to understand. I was ready to give up but kept at it because I was reading this for a book club. I'm so glad I stuck it out because once I got into it, I was often moved to tears by the descriptions of Christ's suffering and that of the people who knew and loved him while he was on earth.
This was originally written in French in 1930 and was translated into English. That may explain some of the difficulty with the wording in the beginning. I encourage you to get through the first part if you're struggling to read this book. You will be rewarded by beautiful imagery and a better understanding of Christ's sacrifice and how this affected those around Him.
As Good Friday approaches, this book makes for wonderful Lenten reading. It helps us to experience the overwhelming love that Jesus has for us. The author's first-hand knowledge of Jerusalem helps us to feel like we are there. Highly recommended!
