This book is a primer and contextualization of Kierkegaard's ‘leap of faith’ and worth reading.

As a pastor, I believe and have experienced countless times this book’s main premise: The beginning and continuance of a Christian’s life has as its primal source of life the ‘leap of faith’ and an active, living faith as opposed to historical research and intellectual certainty. Crump’s thoughts, no doubt, stem from his many conversations with students that came to his college to grow in God only to have their faith shaken.

In summary, Crump says: “In order to effectively and properly encounter God through scripture, you must first encounter Jesus; hence the title’s order. And encountering God, by responding to his gospel, will take a ‘leap of faith’. Certainly, some understanding is necessary for a proper response to the gospel, but fuller understanding only comes by encountering Jesus and then encountering scripture. That is, you cannot fully reason your way to God nor demand that all your questions be answered before you entrust your life to the gospel.”

From the platform from which I live, the book appears to have a few weaknesses. At times, Crump seems to set up a ‘straw man’ that he crushes to support his argument; e.g., the use of Hosea 11:1 by Matt 2:15. Why take an obvious ‘hard saying’ to support your case instead of the majority of other scriptures that require a better argument? Further, like a good preacher-teacher, Crump will state and restate his argument, albeit from several different angles. Lastly, there are theological stances that he takes that I find wrongly nuanced; e.g., his disagreement with R. Hays and D. Carson on the interpretation of the OT by the NT authors.

However, the book’s main premise is invaluable and refreshing and for the most part well supported. I'd especially recommend it to those whose faith is gasping for air, because they’re drowning within the waters of higher criticism.

A frustrating read in that the author seems very reluctant to give the scriptures their supernatural due. It is disappointing that Kierkegaard is turned to as an authority on the interpretation of scripture. Really? Is that the best we have to offer?

Fantastic book. Challenges us in our comfort and calls us to a deeper faith in Christ.
