The chapters by White and MacArthur are probably the best written. White really provides a good historical context of sola scriptura in the early church. Sproul does a good job backing him up on the establishment of Scripture, although he almost seems underutilized.

The chapters by White and MacArthur are probably the best written. However, no ones' pride seems to get in the way here. MacArthur's portion on the sufficiency of Scripture is exactly where he feels comfortable writing and he's good about providing both sides of the argument without spite. The biggest negative is Sinclair Ferguson's chapter on Scripture and tradition.

This book does nothing to prove Sola Scriptura. The chapter White writes on the Fathers he takes snippets of their quotes. He does not quote the entire quote. The Church Fathers are not friends of the protestants. They believed in Catholic doctrine like the Eucharist, Baptismal regeneration, papacy, etc. If the Fathers used Sola Scriptura why do they believe in Catholic doctrines?

The whole book is basically about how important and "God-breathed" Scripture is. The Catholic Church agrees. But when it comes to the issue of the Bible being the ONLY infallible authority this book never explains. They can't even give a convincing argument for the Canon. Sproul says that protestants have a "fallible canon of infallible books." That just put the entire Bible is now suspect. We can never be sure any of those books should be in there in the first place.

Go read "Not By Scripure Alone" by Robert Sungenis.

This book is an in-depth evaluation of the exclusive authority of the Bible as God's only written revelation to humanity. Since God has truly spoken in Scripture, these words are in "a class by themselves"--they are as true as God Himself is true, and therefore they are inerrant; they are as trustworthy as God Himnself is trustworthy, and therefore they are infallible; and as God's words, they are as authoritative as He Himself, and therefore the Bible is not only exclusively the sure and certain guide for life and death, but it will also be the standard and measure used in the evaluation of every one of us on Judgment Day. The reassertion and reaffirmation of "Sola Scriptura"--and all that this term entails--is the critical and absolutely essential need for both the visible Church and every individual within it.

This is really a decent book for an introduction into sola scriptura. It doesn't get bogged in too much history or detail or philosophy, but there is enough there for this kind of smaller book to make its point. The chapters by White and MacArthur are probably the best written. White really provides a good historical context of sola scriptura in the early church. R.C. Sproul does a good job backing him up on the establishment of Scripture, although he almost seems underutilized. I feel Ferguson probably knows his stuff but he tries to include too many sites of Latin and his writing feels really rushed.

This short book does a good job of defining the words, establishing the issues, and starting you on your journey of sola scriptura. This book is not intended to be exhaustive and should not be sought for it. Good authors on a much needed truth in today's Church. Final Grade - A-

This relatively short compilation of essays from an all-star team of reformed scholars is a good introduction to the doctrine of Sola Scriptura.
Much of the debate around the issue is, of course, between the Protestant position and the Roman doctrine of an authoritative repository of Tradition that combines with Scripture to make up the Word of God. It's impossible to deal with those differences without some polemics, but the tone with which the writers make their points isn't strident and their representation of the other side's position doesn't dwell on the most outrageous examples to make their arguments easier to make.
The writers also make ample mention of the practical denial of scriptural authority within evangelicalism. In many ways, this is a more insidious threat, since it claims to recognize scripture as its standard while undermining it in dozens of little ways that leave people with no foundation for faith.
Each of these chapters can be- and have been- subjects of many volumes through the centuries. If you're looking for an easily digestible introduction to the issue, this is an excellent place to start.

More than anything this book confirmed my suspicions about the misuse of scripture. I won't point fingers, because all are guilty of either adding or using only what they deem pertinent. The writers did not let me down.

Haven't quite finished reading the entire book yet, but so far it is well-written and informative.

I find Chapters 3, 4 & 7 especially helpful.
A good book to return to, time and again, to remind ourselves of "Sola Scriptura"
