The Women's Bible Commentary is a trusted, classic resource for biblical scholarship, written by some of the best feminist scholars in the field today. This twentieth anniversary edition features brand new or thoroughly revised essays to reflect newer thinking in feminist interpretation and hermeneutics. It comprises commentaries on every book of the Bible, including the apocryphal books; essays on the reception history of women in the Bible; and essays on feminist critical method. The contributors raise important questions and explore the implications of how women and other marginalized people are portrayed in biblical texts, looking specifically at gender roles, sexuality, political power, and family life, while challenging long-held assumptions. This commentary brings modern critical methods to bear on the history, sociology, anthropology, and literature of the relevant time periods to illuminate the context of these biblical portrayals and challenges readers to new understandings.

Great for clergy AND laypersons. If your pastor doesn't have this on his/her shelf BUY IT FOR THEM! Male and female clergy, from all denominations, should have this as a reference in their Study. Perfect for Christmas/Ordination/Anniversary/Birthday/Welcome gift.

I really appreciate the added dimension this commentary provides in viewing scripture through a different lens. Scripture study is not only the study what is is written but what is omitted as well.

Of course, this isn't the kind of book one reads in a single setting. I have graduate corticated women’s studies. To receive a Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies, students are required to compete a bibliography of 30 books. My choice was Feminist Theology. The professors in the Women's Studies were clueless in this field of study. They weren't interested in Christianity, because they had been soured by Paul's writings about women's place in the church. I also completed a course in Teaching for Social Justice, and again my choice was Feminist Theology. In my research I learned much about this subject, but not as much as I would have liked. The editors if this Bible collected writings from many, many experts of feminism and theologians that makes this Bible an all-embracing version of the Bible. I highly recommend the Women’s Bible Commentary for women searching women's the historical role of women in the Bible and church, and the place of women in Christianity today.

The Women's Bible Commentary has been on recommended and required reading lists for all the bible work I've done in seminary so far. I have read only a few entries so far but I think this is one of the best bible commentaries I've come across and would highly recommend it to all theological students as well as anyone who takes modern interpretation seriously.

If you are a literalist who thinks the King James Version is without error, this is probably not the one for you. But if you (whether woman or man) believe that the Bible is the living word that speaks to all of us, and that scholarship by womanist and feminist scholars deserves to be heard loud and clear, you'd be doing yourself a favor to by this one. These are simply some of the best scholars working today. They are not only historically and theologically sound, but their responses to these texts capture the richness of these texts in both creative and practical ways.

There is nothing intentionally dark about this commentary. The Bible is meant to be challenging, and not merely a book to make us feel good about ourselves. If we are to take it seriously, and with respect to the rich contexts in it, we can't whitewash it.

So far I am very impressed with the Kindle version, and would highly recommend it to those that prefer e-books.

Excellent resource for both women and men. For two long we have relied on men's POV.

This book gives perspective to each book of the bible. I utilized it while studying the New Testament, and appreciated the additional insight. Well written, easy to read and use!
Amazing woman's resource!
