Series: The Library of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament Studies (Book 148)

Series: The Library of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament Studies (Book 148). Paperback: 176 pages. Author Philip R. Davies is a professor of biblical studies in the UK and it is clear from his exhaustive discussions on the historical reality of "ancient Israel" that he is dedicated to, and passionate about, his subjects. From who wrote the biblical literature and how this literature became scripture, he's got it all covered. Davies believes that it is now commonly accepted that stories from the Bible are just that - stories. But, he explains, this does not mean the stories are not related to history.

Series: The Library of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament Studies (Book 141). This book reads like a PhD thesis and may have been. It has all the extensive notes and references you would expect to find in such a document. What I do not like about this book is that, writing from a Christian perspective and mostly referencing Christian works, the author's understanding of some of the Jewish laws are inaccurate. This makes the book rather annoying at times.

Urtext in biblical studies refers to the assumption that there once was a uniform text of the Hebrew Bible to precede both the Septuagint (LXX) and the Masoretic Text (MT). Since the 19th century there has been much scholarly work to regain this Urtext. The theory that there was an Urtext was advocated by Paul de Lagarde. Today it is disputed that there ever was such a uniform text.

Biblical Studies, Hebrew Bible and Ancient Near East. The Semantics of Lying and Deceiving in the Hebrew Prophets ("Ancient Readers and Their Scriptures," St Andrews Symposium for Biblical and Early Christian Studies, University of St Andrews, United Kingdom, May 3rd, 2014). Combining the results of the semantic analysis and close readings, the study reaches conclusions for six main areas of study: (1) the function and nature of prophecy; (2) dreams and visions; (3) being sent; (4) prophets, priests and cult; (5) salvation and doom; and (6) legitimacy and authority. These conclusions explain the conceptual categories related to nābîʾ in the corpus.
