Reading the Bible as Literature provides the idealentry-point to the process of reading, understanding, and assessingwhat many recognize to be the important and powerful literature ofthe Bible. Such reading holds potential for helping studentsunderstand literature generally and the Bible in itself. The bookintroduces the tools of literary analysis, including: language andstyle, the formal structures of genre (narrative, drama, andpoetry), character study, and thematic analysis. The overall organizational structure of the book proceedsincrementally from basic literary elements to higher units of form. Each chapter includes an outline, preliminary considerations thatprovide background and insight into scholarly debates, and anexplanation of the literary qualities of the primary text throughspecific examples, exercises, and directions for furtherstudy. The book emphasizes the act of reading itself, focusing upon thewhole text as it exists in its current form. It invites anexperiential entering into and reliving of the Bible’sstories, encourages analytical and holistic reading, exploresmultiple interpretations, and embraces a power of languageoriginating in the mythological, metaphorical, and symbolic. Aboveall, the book seeks to return the Bible to the common reader and tobuild in that reader an appreciation for a collection of ancient, literary texts often trivialized by competing theologies ormarginalized by a relentless insistence upon fact, science, andhistory.

I bought Crain's book because I teach a Biblical literature survey course and have struggled with students not understanding the difference between reading the Bible as a source of faith and reading it as literature. Crain's book is a great resource for showing students (and all readers) how to read literature, period, not just Biblical literature. She starts with basics, like how to read a plot and how to analyze character. One feature I particularly like is the way she pairs readings for analysis from the Old and New Testaments, so that readers see (without being hit over the head) the close connections between both major divisions of the Bible. I recommend Crain for Biblical literature courses, of course, and also for Bible study groups. Pastors should read Crain's book, too. She will help them interpret Biblical texts in new ways and write more interesting homilies and sermons.

It's a little condensed. This is not a skimmer's book. It's light on most books and focuses a little heavily on Genesis.

Both a very informative book and what I needed for my class.

It's a book for class and the contents are good; however, I think there is too much english stuff and not enough religion.

I had the privilege of reading this text before it was officially printed. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to know more about the Bible. It will force you to think deeply and challange the way you think.
