Chris Verene should be very pleased with this. The book is beautiful, with bold reproductions of his work, and the usual high standard of production by Twin Palms. The photographs are mostly poignant slices of the artist's life, full of resonance and truth, reinforced by Verene's fierce commitment and loyalty to his family and community. When so many photographers feel the need to strive for (detrimental) effects, and the method is the message, Verene keeps it simple, and lets the complexity flow from the images and captions.

Chris Verene is this year's most appealing newcomer, a diamond in the rough whose square color pictures record his family and friends in candid, unvarnished fashion. The book gets its gritty grip on reality by sticking to place, which happens to be Galesburg. The effect is reminiscent of Mark Goodman's visual diary of life in Millerton, .

Focusing on his hometown of Galesburg, Illinois, Chris Verene has photographed the lives of his friends and family through a factual, yet sympathetic, lens for 30 years. Describing himself as a documentary artist, he gives his works narrative titles that create a specific context and often allude to events beyond the frame.

Not necessarily ground breaking work, this is, nonetheless, an important book, sure to become one of my favorites.

When I bought this book---my heart stopped. Chris Verene has captured the familiar feeling you get when you revisit an old town from your past. His pictures contain so much emotion--I am speechless. I hope he continues to take pictures and put out books. As an aspiring photographer, I truly look up to this man.
