product description page.

Paul Strand: Sixty Years of Photographs, a long-unavailable Aperture classic, is one of the most comprehensive surveys of the power and force of a major photographic figure of our time. Before his death in 1976 at age 85, Strand combed his photographic prints and his many books with an eye to the completion of this volume. Seen here is the summation of a lifework, from the first abstract photographs to the series of plant photographs taken in the last years of his life. Also included is a rarely examined series of films--brilliant, unprecedented documentaries that foreshadowed Italian neo-realism and the new cinema of the post-war years. The re-release of this volume, which features the famous biographical profile by Calvin Tomkins and excerpts from Strand's correspondence, interviews and other documents, makes one of photography's major artists newly accessible.

I see many books that purport to be collected photographs of a famous photographer but for whatever reason are by and large the discards and even then the printing and paper quality is so low and the images are so small that one cannot be impressed by the work as presented. This is very much the case with this book on Paul Strand.

When one looks at similar subjects photographed by others of note, one can usually tell immediately who took the picture and even who printed it. Not so with Paul Strand where if the picture had not been taken by this famous photographer it would not merit a glance. There are a few pictures of famous people that are of some interest but they are not great images as the spirit of the subject is seldom captured in the image. The pictures with people in the countryside or at the seashore display a noteworthy lack of composition skill. His images of buildings are often out of focus as too large an aperture was used.

Again I do not know if the fault lies with Paul Strand or the people who put this book together. Either way it is a waste of money. In general one is much better served by viewing the works on a large computer display than as small images poorly printed in a book.

Back before digital photography I used to be a pretty good film (slide) photographer. Then I switched to digital. Now, after twenty years and struggling to keep my digital files alive, I've realized what a mistake I made. I have re-acquired several excellent 2nd hand film cameras and started to try and regain the skills that I once had. As a part of this I decided to go into some black and white photography and needed to have a source of some excellent examples to look at, study and hopefully learn by examining them for lighting, contrast and subject matter. I choose this book and I am extremely pleased. I can reference this book and keep learning for years. The photos are spectacular and encompass a pretty good range of subjects. If you are like me, I highly recommend this book. It's worth every penny.

I'm not dissing digital, it has it's uses for which it can't be beat. But for keepers and memories film is king. Glad to see it's making a come-back.

Gorgeous photographs and an impeccable print job. I ordered this book after seeing a Paul Strand Exhibit in Chattanooga at the Hunter Museum and falling in love with his work. The photos in this book were printed in such a way that they are very close to the real thing, which is quite remarkable.

*My copy was gently used and the bookbinding had come apart from the cover so I used Helmar Acid Free Glue to fix that and now it looks brand new.

My mentor recommended this book to me. I have seen some Paul Strand work and knew I wanted to see more. This book arrived and what a wonderful collection. To make it even better, the quality of the image printing is like having an original silver-gelatin print in my hand. It is masterfully done. And the quality of Strand's work certainly deserved this kind of high quality printing. Best surprise was that I got a brand new First Edition (marked) from Amazon.

My feeling about Strand's work is that he explored abstractions as a photographer decades before the likes of Wynn Bullock, Edward Weston, Brett Weston and others. Unbelievable work.

I used this book to prepare for a presentation on Paul Strand. I found it to be comprehensive and entertaining. I found the profile of Strand by Calvin Tompkins to be quite engaging and full of detail not found elsewhere. It also includes a nice selection of Strand's photography over the many decades he worked. His work is inspirational--I recommend this book to aspiring photographers.

This book contains a wonderful collection of images printed with care If you're a fan of Strand or photography as a whole, you should pick up a copy. I bought mine used, but it arrived in mint condition, still in the plastic..
