An informative book explaining the basics of how to use a digital camera. I found a lot of great tips that I would like to try out. It also enforced my suspicion that I would really like a more expensive camera. A lot of the book is very out of date now. However, basics on composition and exposure still hold good.

The book is quite long and might daunt you at first, but a lot of it does cover the history of digital cameras and other areas not directly related to how to use your camera more effectively. These can be simply skipped if you are not interested in them.

The book does look a little dated by now, but it is still perfect for what I bought it for - A really good, clear guide to the technical side of cameras. It is aimed at the mid-range enthusiast - those who want to know how to do more than just point-and-shoot, but are not previously SLR experts.

I actually saw an article the author had written on the Internet and was amazed that an area I had previously found a bit difficult to understand had been explained by him more clearly than anyone else had managed to. So I bought the book on the strength of that article and I was not disappointed!

I'm only 1/2 way through the book but am very impressed with the presentation of the information. I have read & enjoyed his tips on Photography via PC World/Digital Focus. That led me to select this book and it has not disappointed me. To date I have owned and enjoyed a number of compact digital cameras but just reentered SLR photography after more than thirty years with the purchase of an Olympus E-620 DLSR. The major difference between this camera and my old 35mm SLR is the number of variables. Other than a through-the-lens light meter everything was under my control. Now, controlling the number of variables in any mode selection requires real thought to achieve the desired outcome. Dave Johnson has done a very good job thus far in describing camera settings versus desired outcome. He has related that info to typical DLSR settings. I highly recommend this book for folks like me trying to reenter the SLR world.

This is really a very good book I prefer to say excellent.
I suppose that this book equivalent to a complete course in photography, specially for people who don't know many things about using their camera and they don't know also about many features and options in their camera.
Also, I consider the first 9 chapters, the author tried to explain every single option in the two kinds of cameras:
1. Digital SLR
2. Digital point-and-shoot camera

I think that the reviewer missed to talk about this side of his book, when you read the behind cover page, you can't find this information about the book
In the first 2 chapters, he (the author) tried to give a general concept about digital cameras, about sensors opposite the chemical film, about exposure, he also talked historical.
In the 3rd chapter, he talked about understanding the exposure (this is the most important chapter in the book).
In chapter 4, he talked about how to compose the picture or the image, he gave a very good idea about the rules of composition.
Chapter 5 about flash and lighting, he explained why photographers use the flash when they are shooting a picture in under the daylight (under the sun).
Chapter 6 about close-up photography.
chapter 7 about sports, action and kids.
chapter 8, he talked about how to benefit from all our camera facilities, how we use our camera 100%.
In chapter 9, general ideas about the things we need to benefit from our camera like a tripod, how to protect our camera from different elements.
he tried in every chapter to give for the user of the camera (the reader of his book) he tried to give him all ideas the photographer people work it, he explained the problems facing the "beginner photographer" and how they can solve it.
I consider the first half of the book (first 9 chapters) a complete course in photography specially for the beginners.

I hope this will reveal something about the book, I appreciate the author's effort when he wrote his book wish him best wishes
thank you.

Ok, I know it's an introduction, but really too much discussion about film. Then in figure 3.2 , Dave states " as the shutter speed decreases, the aperture should increase". Clearly an error and a substantive one at that. This should have definitely been picked up before publication.

This book delivered exactly what I was looking for. I have had a digital camera for three years, and realized that my lack of knowledge in the basic principals of photography was holding me back. Not only did this book explain clearly and effectively the basics of photography, but it taught me to get the most out of my digital camera's capabilities. I was getting frustrated and now I am enjoying my camera again.
I also wanted to learn what to look for in a higher-end camera down the line, and this was covered as well. I understand how to weigh the different features against the kind of pictures I want to take.
Well written and useful. I recommend it.

I ordered this book because it had good customer reviews, seemed nicely written and seems to cover many aspects of good digital camera function and use. I am brand new to digital shooting so I am learning from the ground up and thought this seemed all-inclusive for my needs. It arrived super fast, well packed and it had very good communication enclosed for follow-up if needed. No need; everything just as it said it would be. Good seller on Amazon!

This book on digital SLR cameras covers just about everything: buying one, settings on the camera, taking shots, PhotoShop, programs, formats, editing, you name it. I love this book. As I am a casual nature photographer trying to get more serious about my hobby/art, this book was indispensible. It's even enjoyable to just sit down some rainy day to just read. Easy reading style, easy to understand, not condescending in tone. Genuinely helpful book.
Anyone entering the DSRL field may enjoy this book and find it highly helpful.
I've only had time to page through this, but bought the 2nd edition at goodwill, and really got a lot out of it, even though it's 10 years old. Basics haven't changed, but I wanted an update on what's changed.
