Images: My Life in Film. Bergman's second autobiography. Images was in part prompted by Bergman's dissatisfaction with the earlier interview book Bergman on Bergman, in which he felt he had been manipulated by the interviewers. Using his books and filmmaking diaries, Bergman analyzes a number of his own films, grouped into thematic units. On his first efforts as a film director

Now, in Images, Ingmar Bergman turns the magic lantern of memory from himself to his films. To write this book, Bergman rescreened all of his films, many of which he had not seen since their release. His friend, the movie critic and publisher Lasse Bergstrom, also viewed and discussed them, helping to jog his memory and to expose his psychological blind spots about his work. Bergman relied, too, on annotated scripts, newspapers, and the recollections of others, but especially on his own workbooks and diaries, from which he is here publishing extracts for the first time.

A number of Ingmar Bergman’s films were released in the United States and Great Britain under different titles. In this book the first mention lists both titles wherever possible, with the British title appearing between parentheses. Subsequently, either title may be used. The Man Who Asked Hard Questions by Woody Allen.

An analysis of the cinematic work of Ingmar Bergman by the director himself. Using scripts, working notes and memory, he comments on his failures as well as his successes; the themes that bind his work together; his concerns and anxieties; and on the relationship between his life and art.

Quick and interesting read. I love his films, and it was fun to read his thoughts on the films he worked on and his relationships with his actors/actresses. He was so honest in his writing, so it's nice to know what he was thinking especially when it came to his own films.

I took an Ingmar Bergman class, and I therefore had to watch a lot of Bergman films as well as analyze and write about them. Many of Bergman films as many know are sometimes very hard to understand. However this book cleared up so many things for me in the films. The fact the book is mostly Bergman commenting on his own films is great, so you don't have someone else trying to interpret someone else's mind. I you need or want to better understand and enjoy Bergman's works, get this book!!
