Gregory Peck's acting career has spanned six decades, during which the ruggedly handsome actor has played everything from a jaunty reporter to an angry Western gunfighter. However, as a Gregory Peck fan all of my adult life, this bio, while not leading me to more than a superficial understanding of the man, is a comprehensive examination of his life as an actor, first in live theater and then in front of the motion picture cameras. The author's progression through the decades of Gregory's career is methodical almost to a fault.

His first screen test was a disaster, his features were large and irregular and his left ear outsized the right, yet he would one day be headlined as the Most Handsome Man in the World. And most of his leading ladies—among them, Ingrid Bergman in Spellbound, Jennifer Jones in Duel in the Sun, Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday, Sophia Loren in Arabesque, Ava Gardner in On the Beach—would not disagree. Nor would Greta Konen, the vivacious hairdresser who in 1942 married a shy, insecure New York stage actor named Gregory Peck. Irreverent, candid, and refreshingly honest, Lynn Haney's carefully researched biography not only charts the remarkable career of the star who took the Oscar for his memorable performance as Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, but also plumbs Peck's frequently troubling complexity in his off-screen roles as husband, father, lover, son. For along with Peck's engaging charm and easy generosity came an ingrained stubbornness, explosive temper, and often-melancholy turn of mind. And with his triumphs came heartbreak, personal tragedy, failure, and doubt. This is a story cast with movie moguls, directors, and nearly every major luminary in Hollywood and, starring for the first time in toto, Gregory Peck.

Great story about a great actor and a real man. Well-written with so much personal information I never knew about one of my "heros," Gregory Peck. Who didn't want Atticus Finch as their father? And I was Scout from the day I was born. This book lets us look inside the real man, who at times was so different than the self-assured characters Peck played in his movie roles. We find out about the "real man" and what lies beneath. I had no idea the struggles it took for him even to get noticed in the beginning... hard to believe now that he became recognized as "one of the greats."

Thanks for such a well-written and interesting tale!

Title promises more than it delivers. Gregory Peck, great actor, and, importantly, a decent man. Save your money, the book is very boring. Few facts and page after page of unnecessary reflection and speculation.

Excellent book. Enjoyed every chapter of it. Many things I was not aware of concerning this wonderful and legendary actor.

I've always loved Gregory Peck.
This is a fine book, showing Pecks life as a boy, his life as an actor, a Father, loosing a child to Suicide, and in the end,
a humble and human portrayal of the character we came to know in "To Kill A Mockingbird"- Atticus Finch...

A most well written book and touching story.

Mr. Peck is revealed to be a career-driven man during most of the early part of his career (and something of a heavy drinker), to the detriment of himself and of his family. His successful second marriage of several decades is attributable to his wife's indulging him excessively (a state much sought after by the male of our species, but seldom found). THAT in itself is the major secret, the linch-pin for his "charmed" life. He didn't become the Atticus Finch look-a-like until much later (better late than never). The reader comes away better informed about Mr. Peck, but not necessarily in awe of or awestruck by him, and certainly not excited by the story of his life. For those seeking tales of a more adventurous life, may I suggest you try "Burt Lancaster - an American Life" by Kate Buford.

I just can't seem to understand why Ms Haney chose Gregory Peck as her subject when she obviously does not even like him. I assume biographies of the stars are written for the their fans and though I appreciate truth but the lot that appears in Haney's book seems to be gossip. What was she thinking?? Looks like she collected snippets on Greg Peck's life from gutter journalists and printed it out in the book.

She seems to be a big fan of his first wife though, as the demise of their marriage is firmly laid at Mr Peck's door. His other sin seems to be falling in love with his second one and moving on with his life with her. Well here is a news flash for you dear author, in instances like a divorce, it takes two to tango. We never seem to understand from your book as to what was Greta Peck's failing as a wife that led to it.

Also half baked accounts of his son's sucide are quite jarring. Again the author seems to think that it was Gregory Peck's stature and achivements that led his son to his demise. What was he suppose to do? Become a hermit & run to jungles so that his son would not be plagued with inferioty complex?

Really star bigraphers like Ms Haney should stick to what they do best...write for useless glossies that the twits of the world love so very much and leave book writing to the more accompalished writers.
