The Physical Actor maps out an approach to training that forges a connection between physical expression and the acting process. The title of Loui’s book accurately indicates its stance as a comprehensive guide to the physical training of actors.

The Physical Actor maps out an approach to training that forges a connection between physical expression and the acting process. Comprised primarily of practical exercises for the movement studio, the book outlines approaches to warming up, spatial relationships, mime technique, moving with partners, and contact improvisation and composition, all of which emanate from the book’s descriptive subtitle Exercises for Action and Awareness.

The Physical Actor is a comprehensive book of actor’s exercises . Annie Loui is the real deal. I love her insights into the craft and her reminders of why we do this and why the physical work is important to the actor.

The Physical Actor is a comprehensive book of actor’s exercises, designed for the development of a strong and flexible physical body able to move with ease through space and interact instinctively on-stage. Annie Loui draws on her training with Etienne Decroux, Carolyn Carlson and Jerzy Grotowski to bring Contact Improvization into the theatrical sphere and explain how it can be used to work with texts and applied directly to the theatrical stage. Physical actor, Loui, Annie. Описание: The Physical Actor is a comprehensive book of exercises for actors. It is carefully designed for the development of a strong and flexible physical body able to move with ease through space and interact instinctively on-stage. Analyzing the relationship between dramatic action and the controversial art of acting, William Worthen demonstrates that what it means to act, to be an actor, and to communicate through acting embodies both an ethics of acting and a poetics of drama. This book is simply remarkable... I loved it. As I enter into the world of academia, it will serve as a source of huge inspiration and guidance for me. It presents a remarkably and uniquely clear, fascinating, and inspiring look at a Master Teacher's approach to training actor's to connect physically to their bodies and to text - offering a multitude of exercises and physical approaches to investigate. As a professional regional theatre actor for many years and a university actor-training program professor - this book is simply a must-buy and should be required reading for anyone interested in delving deeply into the actor's process or performance studies.

This book has been so useful to me as a teacher and an actor. Loui brings you through an entire curriculum of movement training, one lesson plan at a time. She oscillates between conditioning the actor for control and precision and training the body for imaginative abandon. Each exercise is clearly explained and includes images which are invaluable, and really fun too! Buy this book. SO helpful!
