He has created over 50 ballets. MacMillan choreographs abstract dances, but his commitment to narrative ballet and psychologically charged subjects has secured him a special place in dance history.

He has created over 50 ballets. He does not gloss over the lows in MacMillan's career, but neither does he offer many insights into the talent and artistic vision of his subject. Nonetheless, this is a very serviceable volume; for medium and large libraries

Kenneth MacMillan : The Man and the Ballets by Edward Thorpe. Four months after Kenneth MacMillan died, his life and work was celebrated in a Memorial Service at Westminster Abbey. The Royal Ballet Sinfonia played music from his ballets, while Anthony Dowell read a tribute written by Dame Ninette de Valois, Founder of The Royal Ballet. Lynn Seymour read Cecil Day Lewis’s poem Pegasus. A golden bridle came to him in sleep – A mesh of immortal fire and sensual earth, Pliant as love, compulsive as the sweep Of light-years, brilliant as truth, perfect as death.

Sir Kenneth MacMillan (11 December 1929 – 29 October 1992) was a British ballet dancer and choreographer who was artistic director of the Royal Ballet in London between 1970 and 1977.

Sir Kenneth MacMillan (11 December 1929 – 29 October 1992) was a British ballet dancer and choreographer who was artistic director of the Royal Ballet in London between 1970 and 1977, and its principal choreographer from 1977 until his death. Earlier he had served as director of ballet for the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. He was also associate director of the American Ballet Theatre from 1984 to 1989, and artistic associate of the Houston Ballet from 1989 to 1992.

Even in his ballets on relatively traditional themes, MacMillan pushes . This ballet deals with the theme of sexual awakening. A girl and her cousin attract the attention of an older, unhappily married couple.

Even in his ballets on relatively traditional themes, MacMillan pushes things to visceral extremes: Lady Capulet’s grief-stricken pounding of her chest at Tybalt’s death in Romeo and Juliet; the Salamander Prince’s haunting silent screams in The Prince of the Pagodas. 1956 was also the year that theatre's ‘angry young man’ John Osborne’s now-classic play Look Back in Anger was first performed at the Royal Court, shocking the theatre world with its uncompromising, fierce depiction of everyday life.
