John Peel-A Life In Music' was published in 2004, and as the man himself passed away in October of that year, this short little book could be seen as another of those 'cashing in' biographies. However, Michael Heatley's treatment of his subject is certainly affectionate and something of a tribute to the man and his forty years of broadcasts. It is a monumental achievement, and essential reading for all those whose tastes Peel influenced over so many years

John Peel had a pioneering radio career that spanned almost forty years, in which he championed left-field sounds from Captain Beefheart to Siouxsie and the Banshees. When he died suddenly at the age of sixty-five in October 2004, millions mourned the loss of this quirky, influential figure.

Michael Heatley's John Peel: A Life in Music is the more meticulously factual of the two. He tells us Peel was born two days before the national evacuation began in 1939; that he first played 'Anarchy in the UK' on 19 November 1976. By contrast, Mick Wall's homage presents us with a leisurely stroll through the life of an 'irreplacable man'.

John Peel, the balding, self-deprecating Liverpudlian with the wilfully obscure taste in music, was an unlikely national institution. Yet with a pioneering radio career that spanned almost forty years, in which he championed left-field sounds from Captain Beefheart to Siouxsie and the Banshees, that is exactly what he became. When he died suddenly at the age of sixty-five in October 2004, millions mourned the loss of this quirky, influential figure. Now in this new biography, Michael Heatley traces Peel's career from his early counter-culture days on pirate radio through his maverick career at Radio One, right up to his later years where he found a new audience on Radio Four's popular Saturday morning show, Home Truths.
