George Rochberg (July 5, 1918 – May 29, 2005) was an American composer of contemporary classical music. Long a serial composer, Rochberg abandoned the practice following the death of his teenage son in 1964; he claimed this compositional technique had proved inadequate to express his grief and had found it empty of expressive intent. By the 1970s, Rochberg's use of tonal passages in his music had invoked controversy among critics and fellow composers.

He was 86 and made his home in Newtown Square, Pa. The cause was complications of recent surgery, said his wife, Gene. Gaudiker
A magnificent book by a great composer--wise, witty, learned, and deeply felt. Rochberg stands like a colossus in the field of contemporary classical music. Moreover, few modern composers (if any) excelled him in his literary gifts.

All due respect to the other reviewer, Rocherberg shows poise and illuminates the many misdirections of the 20th century. Rochberg exposes the farce and folly held by those in the so-called avant-garde (of both formalist and indeterminist leanings).

This is a book for those who's music is MUSIC and for those who actually use their ears!
