The Audio Expert is a bold title, with an even bolder claim in its subtitle, but its 23 chapters and roughly 650 pages do constitute a fairly comprehensive. The book provides a useful working knowledge and understanding of audio engineering and an extended range of related topics and - more importantly, in some ways - how everything is interrelated. To that end, The Audio Expert combines practical examples and applications with theoretical explanations, although much of that theory involves familiar simplifications and short-cuts rather than hard-core technical complexities befitting of a true 'expert'.

Many of us (including TNT-audio writers) drive cars or ride motorcycles that could easily be outperformed on street or track by more modern versions with fancy electronic driver aids and active suspension systems but we prefer the grin provoking visceral joys of older more mechanical artefacts demanding more driver input. If we were trying to win races or merely get from A to B more quickly, the latest alternative will do a better, more efficient job.

If you're an intermediate to advanced recording engineer or audiophile, you already know the basic mechanics of how audio "works." This book will take you beyond that, weaving together audio concepts, theories of aural perception and acoustics, musical instrument physics, and basic electronics and demonstrating their relationships to one another.

Rather than merely showing you how to use audio devices like equalizers and compressors, Winer explains how they work internally and how they are spec'd and tested.

The introduction says "This book is for everyone who wants to truly understand audio but prefers practical rather than theoretical explanations" and also that it's for people who've been around audio for awhile and want to know how it really works. That's me, and it met my needs perfectly. However it would not be appropriate for those who don't already have a sense of what decibels are and how electronic gear works or who are not technically inclined because the whole books is about the science, engineering and art of audio equipment and its use. It's friendly and approachable, simplified without being dumbed down, but it's still a technical book.

This book is written in a very straightforward, plain language manner. Moving logically from one topic to another and treating each in detail without being either dry nor falsely humorous. I got the impression that Ethan is a friendly, straightforward, knowledgeable and no-nonsense guy. He's honest in his mention of areas where there is controversy in the industry (e.g. are oxygen-free copper cables better?), unapologetic about his opinions (no!) and rational in supporting them (because you can't measure any difference). He's also really good at explaining what really matters (e.g. without proper treatment the acoustics of your listening room make even the best speakers sound bad, and even the best speakers have far more distortion than any competent, inexpensive amp) -- and again he explains why in ways that make sense.

I bought the book primarily for the material in three of its 23 chapters and ended up reading eight because I enjoyed it so much. There are other chapters I'm holding in reserve until I get to those points in my audio journey.

Thank you Ethan for sharing your knowledge so generously and writing such an approachable book.

Winer may not be the audio expert, but he certainly is an audio expert. I'm an electrical engineer who designs radio equipment, but who also dabbles in audio and my opinion is that this guy knows his stuff, really! If you want to learn about audio without the voodoo, this is the book for you. If you want to move up to more technical books, check out books by Self and Codell. His videos are quite good as well. So why only four stars, I may be nitpicking, but the abbreviation for kilohertz is kHz, NOT KHz.

Lots of good information, a bit too detailed at times but a reference one can go back to when you want even more depth that you explored before.
*Nameless*
Comprehensive, in depth, and understandable. There might be more in depth books on specific subjects for audio professionals, but this book is a great audio 101 book. I'm a home audio enthusiast and this has helped me understand some terms I've heard bandied about by professionals I know.

This book is certainly a prime reference for anybody wishing to know anything about recording, mixing and producing audio. It is amazing that the author has so much in-depth experience both as a musician, composer and recording engineer. The book covers literally EVERY aspect of the subject, including authoritative chapters from basic audio principles and acoustics, to the characteristics of musical instruments. Ethan Winer is truly an expert - and is not embarrassed about saying so! Its a case of "been there, done it". The result is that you have to read the book intelligently, and relate the content to where YOU are, and what YOU wish to get out of reading it. Then you will truly benefit from it. I found myself re-reading the content a number of times just to be able to absorb this vast, authoritative quantity of information. There are also numerous references to sound files prepared as illustrative and test material by the author, and excellent free applications which you can download to help you on your way. Well done Ethan, indeed.

If you do any kind of work with audio equipment, buy this book. If you are planning to buy an expensive home theatre you need this book and your system builder should be reading from it as he explains what he is going to do for you. Acoustics are the most import part of sound and if you are planning to spend to build the best you should know what you are doing and that is why you need this book:
I just got my copy and I recommend it highly. I will post a short disclaimer that I know Ethan. On the other hand I am not a real traps customer, yet as I do not currently have space for a home theatre. This is not a how to buy guide. Ethan makes no recommendations for products and while real traps do show up from time to time they are used as examples on how to solve common audio problems. Ethan also takes the mythmakers of the audio world to task, not by name, but by telling you what you should look out for. This is a very technical book, but if you have the basic understanding of sound and some very limited electronics knowledge(know what a soldering iron does) you should be fine. Ethan states that this book is for experts and not beginner, then turns around and explains things so well that you don't really need any expertise. I am by no means an expert in audio, but so far this book has not put me to sleep yet. A very good audio book
