Regular readers of Horn Matters know that Bruce Hembd and I both count Verne Reynolds among our former . They are all either direct quotes from his book The Horn Handbook or things he said in lessons around the time we were in school.

Regular readers of Horn Matters know that Bruce Hembd and I both count Verne Reynolds among our former teachers. In an prior article I highlighted ten things I learned from Reynolds, and from that article you will note that, at least in the time frame we were at Eastman, he was certainly a stern, old school horn teacher. Somewhere between then and now the Hornist Hamsters meme was created.

This is THE book concerning horn technique. 3. There's little here that isn't covered more thoroughly and more authoritatively in Farkas Art of French Horn Playing and Reynolds The Horn Handbook. First published in 1962, updated and greatly added to 30 years later. A must for anyone playing, or contemplating playing, the horn. Like Farkas, Schuller prefers a moderate approach to selecting an instrument and mouthpiece. Unlike Farkas, he's not very specific, except he doesn't like big bore horns, by which I think he means large bell throat. Both criticize what has come to be known as the big American horn sound as being immoderate, without naming names.

Dennis Brain is considered to be the one who brought the horn into prominence as a featured instrument. In fact, a number of composers wrote pieces specifically with him in mind, including Paul Hindemith and Benjamin Britten. Dennis Brain, 1953 by Norman Parkinson. Dennis Brain May 1921 – 1 September. horn player Dennis Brain, 1921-1957.

Excellent resource. ALL hornists should have this along with both Farkas, the Morley-Pegge, the Gregory, the Tuckwell and the Gunther Schuler resources. Doug Hill's work is also a must for your library. Unfortunately, they kept sending paperback copies of the Reynolds book, and this was a gift; so, I chose instead the Terry Johns book " Letters from Lines and Spaces." That one is also worth your consideration.
Sarin
As an autodidact, I find this book helpful in understanding the basic philosophy of playing the horn: why to warm up, what exercises are most helpful, etc.
Arcanefist
Just what I wanted and expected. Very pleased!
Silvermaster
An important addition to the literature on how to play the French horn.
Erthai

Very detailed and complete. One of the best guidebooks out there that I have found for the Horn.
Saintrius
This book is an invaluable supplement to the Farkas book, which should also be in the home of every horn player. It is much larger, with extensive discussion of the basic etudes and much, much more.
