And his highly selective, fairly subjective recycling of the vast, detailed source materials - including Cosima Wagner's recently published diaries - is never less than pointed and thoughtful, often tart and surprising. And, if Taylor does a minimal, though comprehensive, job with the women in Wagner's life (second wife Cosima is strangely shadowy here), the problematic ties with Ludwig, and, especially, Nietzsche, are examined with unromanticized vigor. Some readers may find the philosophical synopses of the operas hard going - and any 250-page Wagner biography can only be a point of departure for serious readers.

An interesting and valuable work, perhaps a bit difficult for those not well-grounded in philosophy. Especially valuable for his relationship with Nietzche and his influence on Wagner's own prolific literary works.

Comparisons are odious, but I think this is the best one volume biography of Wagner extant.

I have read Ernest Newman with great pleasure and the surfeit of details he provides, while many aren't relevant to the music, do give us a vision of Wagner the man that's unforgettable. I wonder how many biographers who've written at length about great composers are so clear that they consider the music a supreme achievement and the man a disaster? Cairns certainly admired Berlioz the man and De La Grange worshipped Mahler to the nth degree.

But Newman isn't a good guide to the philosophy that underpins Wagner's life. I agree with him that Schopenhauer's "system" is mostly windy nonsense and that it inspired Wagner in composing TRISTAN and DER RING is its major value, but Newman gives a poor account of Nietzsche, judging him almost entirely by his problematic relationship with Wagner, ignoring the significance Nietzsche has in the history--and the death--of systematic philosophy.

Whereas Taylor's remarks about both philosophers are less biased and judicious in their brevity.

Gregor-Dellin's biography is arguably the most over-praised of the Wagner bios, being the work of a novelist who didn't have the training or experience to write biography. Derek Watson's bio is very good as far as it goes, but Watson mostly passes over Wagner's thought (such as it was) in favor of the twists and turns of his vexing life.

If you supplement Taylor with Barry Millington's Master Musicians volume (the revised edition)--or vice-versa--you get a very well-rounded picture of all the aspects of Wagner's life, thought, and music. I recommend these volumes to anyone who wants to get a purchase on the greatest composer in European music, cad though he was ...
