First, as background, I have been playing bass for nearly 20 years. Believe it or not I have never even picked up an electric or acoustic guitar. A couple months ago I got a wild hair and decided I wanted to give guitar a shot. I bought one and absolutely love playing it.

This puts me in a weird situation when it comes to looking for guitar instruction books. I'm a total beginner on guitar, but I know how to read and I know theory and scales. Most beginner guitar books are very rudimentary for me. Usually it is late in the book before it gets to stuff I don't already know. That was my first concern before buying this book, particularly as it is a "Complete Idiot's" Guide.

Well, I'm happy to report that this book is definitely a worthy addition to my collection. I did have to mostly skip over the first couple chapters, but after that there was some very good and useful information.

I particularly like how the author deals with strumming. Most other books I've looked at deal with strumming from mostly an acoustic guitar perspective. That is, they teach you about strumming up and down over all the strings in the chord you are playing. However, I quickly learned with the electric guitar that you can't usually do that. You have to break up the chord into chunks and strum bits and pieces, particularly when distortion is involved. This prevents your rhythm playing from becoming a muddy mess.

Another thing I've disliked about other beginning rock guitar methods is that they seem to present only the basic power chords. Yes, power chords are a huge part of rock and this book points that out and gets you well trained in those. But they aren't the only thing. Fortunately this book deals with fuller chords as well. You just have to remember, as I stated above, not to strum them out in full when you have distortion turned on. The author even gets into ways to add nice ornamentations and spice to your rhythm playing. Kudos for this.

So I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn rock guitar, even if you are coming from another instrument with a knowledge of theory. If you are not the book still has you covered so fear not.

I'm a 50 year old lady who recently bought herself a left handed red electric guitar. I'm loving every minute of learning how to play. This book is helping me along the way. I like the conversational tone of the writing. I find it keeps my interest & keeps it fun. The CD is a nice bonus. Kudos to the author for mentioning the added thought processes left handed players encounter along the way. I'm enjoying learning the intricacies of the instument. I am thrilled with my accomplishments like moving back & forth between chords, and learning the first few lines of one of my favorite songs, House of the Rising Sun. Like I said, I'm diggin the fun and the book is helping me smile. Rock On!!!

This is better than the version that replaced it (Playing Guitar - Idiots Guide by the same author). A lot of the content in the two books is about the same, but I found this one to be better organized, better illustrated, and easier to understand.

At the age of 42 I picked up a guitar with the serious intention of learning to play. It is now nearly six years later and I am still very much a student. The guitar, for me at least, is a fairly complicated instrument to play well. Also, there seems to be as many methods of learning guitar as there are teachers. I am a software engineer by trade, and my desire is to understand deeply why the guitar is built the way it is, and also, I want to understand enough music theory so that I can apply the guitar to create music on my own. I am not simply interested in memorizing chord charts and scale patterns.

I first stumbled upon David Hodge on the excellent Guitar Noise web site (...). In my opinion, he is an excellent teacher, and in fact it was through his lessons on Guitar Noise that I actually learned to play some actual songs. So, when I found out he was writing this book, I bought it the on the very first day it was available.

I haven't made it all the way through the book yet, but the material I have been through is excellent. In my opinion, this book is a very nice balance between readability, music theory, and guitar technique. Over the past six years, I have accumulated quite a few books in the quest of that 'eureka' moment where I can be like Neo and say "I know guitar". There are not many that really help that much in the quest. This book is an excellent addition to your library for your life-long mission of learning the guitar.

While this book title may suggest that you'll only learn a limited amount, the fact is that this is an excellent, well written book for the beginning guitarist. Clear explanations. Good pace for the lessons. CD included. You'd be surprised how much you can learn using this guide.

Very well written book. I used to play in bands back in 1964-1967. Thanks to the draft had to make a career change. I have forgotten more than I ever knew. I'm 65 now and going back to start over. Also I have been building guitars in my wood shop with great success as per music store guitar teck. Hopefully this book can help me learn to play what I make. Seams to be a great book!

This book makes sense to me. I wish the cd was a dvd but it still works nicely. This was bought for an addition to another dvd set I have, and it works nicely together.
I have not completely gone through the book but it looks like it will be excellent for self taught as well as for a student book. It starts from beginner and goes to intermediate. I am familiar with Mr. Hodge's work from the Guitar Noise website [...] (Check it out). I plan on using it for students. The great thing about this book is that it gets them playing right away. There is also an appendix of "Where to go from here" resources. I will do a follow up review in a month or 2, but if you are looking for a good self taught resource this is it.
