I understand this to be one of the first surveys covering the history of choral music for academic instruction. It's well-written and easy to read. The most important movements from Notre Dame polyphony through the Baroque era are covered, including treatments of notable choral composers and their notable works. My only criticism, (this is just of the first volume), is that the section that covers the Fall of Rome through Notre Dame polyphony is confined to a single, short chapter. Though, this might be a desirable feature for a text in a choral *literature* seminar, (as opposed to a seminar of choral music *history*).

Masterful, comprehensive, and well written, this is an excellent resource for students, teachers, and performers, not only of choral music but of "classical" music in general. Chet Alwes is a remarkable teacher with encyclopedic knowledge, and has shared this with countless conducting graduate students over many years. Now his knowledge and insight is available to a wide audience. Teachers of choral literature should definitely own, read, and refer to this book.
Do check out Volume 2 as well.
