Natural Fingering – A Topographical Approach. New York pianist and teacher Jon Verbalis book Natural Fingering is a rich resource on the subject of piano fingering. The black keys belong essentially to the three longest fingers – CPE Bach. Please do not think that I am so naïve as to ignore the logic of the circle around which our scales are built and the center of which is C. I merely stress that the theory of piano playing which deals with the hand and its physiology is distinct from the theory of music.

A Topographical Approach to Pianism. The first comprehensive discussion of fingering solutions for pianists since Hummel's monumental treatise of 1828. Draws on the latest advances in related fields of movement studies, biokinetics, and bodywork practice. In-depth study of the challenge of double notes including an historical overview. Lays the groundwork for a pianistic pedagogy as implied in Chopin's Projet de méthode.

He is the author of Natural Fingering – A Topographical Approachto Pianism published by Oxford University Press (ou. om - Academic and Professional) and the forthcoming Capturing Inspiration – E. Robert Schmitz and a Natural Pianism. Chopin in Paris, 242-3.

Though incomplete at the time of his death in 1849, Chopin's Projet de méthode was nonetheless revolutionary in many respects. But with his Fundamental Pattern, Chopin announced the recognition, if not discovery, of the keyboard's extraordinary topographical symmetry and postulated a core formulation for a new "pianistic" pedagogy. More than a hundred years later the now-legendary Heinrich Neuhaus would passionately plead for this pedagogy and a pianism rooted in it.Natural Fingering explores this remarkable symmetry, significantly as it sheds light on fingering matters for the now vast catalogue of repertoire. It also examines the revolutionary impact of equal temperament on compositional key choice as well as the liberating influence of Charles Eschmann-Dumur's unique discoveries regarding symmetrical inversion. Author Jon Verbalis develops principles for a topographically-based fingering strategy that reflect a surprising compatibility of this fixed symmetrical organization with the most efficient biokinetic capabilities of the pianist's playing mechanism. He addresses previously neglected or overlooked technical aspects of pianism as they relate to movement in keyboard space generally as well as fingering specifically.Symmetrical fingerings for all the fundamental forms are presented in innovative, instructive format. The reader will also find an unusually extensive, in-depth discussion of double note challenges. Answering Neuhaus's call for the reappraisal of a certain pedagogical status quo, several chapters are devoted to the relevant implications of Chopin's Fundamental Pattern. The author also advances guidelines for a progressive implementation of natural fingering principles from the very start, as well as "retooling" for teachers and students alike. Of special note are the cross-hand major and minor scales for the earliest stages, in which the necessity of thumb under/hand over pivoting actions is eliminated.Natural Fingering is the first comprehensive discussion of fingering solutions for pianists since Hummel's monumental treatise of 1828. The book is complemented by a companion website, which serves as a supplement to the printed edition. The website features copious excerpts from the extant repertoire, extended discussions on relevant topics, and a comprehensive manual of the fundamental forms with symmetrically adjusted fingerings.

The author, John Verbalis, is clearly a seasoned piano performer, teacher and a real scholar of the history of piano technique. His main point is that the playing and teaching of piano fingering should be based on the most mechanically efficient use of the hand and fingers given the layout of the piano: a wide keyboard, white keys closer to the body than black ones, and black keys higher than white ones. Attending to these simple concepts is what the author refers to in an overblown phase, "topological approach". The author usefully describes Chopin's original idea that the most natural position for the hand is with the middle fingers on the cluster of three black keys, the thumb and little fingers on nearby white keys. Much back and forth on teaching methods since then are described at great length in this book. Most useful are the author's recommendations for the best fingerings of scales, thirds, arpeggios, much of which is left for a website--he provides the link and the password.

But the book is far too long, and written in a dense and often incomprehensible style. It is hard to believe that any editor at Oxford University press had actually read this book. One quote from one of the notes will show what I mean: (note 13 on page 229: "In successfully transmitting vertical force to the key (verticalization), the requisite alignment for ulno-radial counterbalances and counteractions, especially the counter-rotational stresses of pronation and supination, is especially subtle. Appropriate shoulder complex stabilization dynamically coordinated within the prescribed range of upper arm rotation (circumduction) must provide the necessary basis for adequate control".

There is a good book here waiting to emerge, one quarter the length of the present one. I hope Mr.Verbalis brings out a short revised version, thoroughly and unsentimentally edited.

The ideas are revolutionary.
But the form in is not user friendly.
The way it was written takes lots of efforts to concentrate.
I fell asleep every time I was reading it.
Ideally, the book should be reprinted as a more concise and revised form.

This is an amazing book. It is clearly a lifetime work by a piano intellectual and does for the 21st century pianist what Chopin did for his contemporaries. It should be mandatory reading for every beginning pianist. Its pianistic logic is overwhelming. A careful reading by an advanced (and open minded) pianist might result in beneficial changes in technique. Because most people start to play as children a simplified version for a younger audience would fulfill a real need.

This book is best used sitting at the piano going through the fingerings and exercises elucidated by the author. However, the format is large and it is difficult to place the book on the piano music stand while playing. I solved the problem by taking the pages out of its binding, punching holes in the pages and placing the pages in a three ring binder. The next edition should be placed in a spiral binder. It would be worth the extra money to do this.
Yellow Judge
Highly original and seminal work on the most important topic in piano playing.

I thoroughly enjoy this book and have started to apply its principles. It is making me a better pianist. It is always best to learn all you can about any particular subject we want to learn. This is very helpful and I recommend it highly to anyone wishing to learn proper fingering of musical pieces.
Arakus
Every pianist that aspires to a professional career should read this to enable him to make informed choices in the "art" of fingering for a more fluent technique.

I can sum up the book in two sentences. Put your right hand 4th finger on Bb, and your left-hand one on F#. Keep your thumbs on white keys, when you can, and try playing scales with these concepts in mind. There, you now have the book in abstract form.
Reading it was like going through the maze of the Minotaur. Must be a doctoral thesis. The concepts are excellent, the writing, while endless and blocky, is thorough, often to the point of discursive distraction. But, the REAL rub is that, until we are all trained to learn the scales from this point of view, adopting his fingerings will remain deeply counter-intuitive for most players of any skill. Its only hope is for young people to get with this system as relative beginners.
I for one have adopted and teach a different system of my own devising, and probably should not pass much more judgement. The book is large-format, full of page after page of full text, and a bit forbidding as a read. The information about the Chopin style of fingering is excellent, however, so you'll have to decide if it's worth the time and money. Read my summary. If it intrigues you, so much the better. If your interest has been satisfied by the abstract, keep playing, and don't look back.
