Emily Carr, an Introduction to Her Life and Art. Toronto: Firefly Books, 1996. Her enthusiasm for her subject is evident, clearly communicated and compelling. The book's argument involves two main layers, which complement and shed light on one another, even while seeming at times to pull in opposite directions.

Emily Carr: An Introduction to Her Life and Art by. Anne Newlands, Emily Carr. Want to Read savin. ant to Read. The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson: An Introduction.

Probably one of my favourites has been Emily Carr: An Introduction to Her Life and Work by Anne Newlands. This is an amazing introduction to one of Canada’s iconic West Coast artist, who had an unexpected (for me) connection to the Group of Seven. The author’s biographical notes are accompanied by appropriate reproductions for that stage of Miss Carr’s life, and help the reader understand the different influences, personal and professional, on her work

This is a wonderful INTRODUCTION to Emily Carr's art and how it evolved during her fascinating lifetime.

This is a wonderful INTRODUCTION to Emily Carr's art and how it evolved during her fascinating lifetime. The color plates are well chosen and beautiful reproductions. It is written in the Emily Carr tradition of "presenting essentials only, discarding everything of minor importance". I am sure Emily would have approved.

Emily Carr: an Introduction to Her Life and Art". Ontario : Firefly Books/Bookmakers Press.

Emily Carr was born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia, then a small town and quite isolated from centres of culture on the East Coast. She was brought up in a house commissioned by her father, a prosperous merchant, and now known as the Emily Carr House. She gave this name to a book about her experiences with the natives, published in 1941. The book won the Governor General's Award that year. Emily Carr: an Introduction to Her Life and Art".

"Some can be active to a great age but enjoy little," observed Emily Carr shortly before her death in 1945. "I have lived." The impressive scope of Carr's art and her unorthodox life are the subjects of art educator Anne Newlands' latest book. In a text that skillfully blends selections from Carr's own writings with illustrated commentary, Newlands creates a delightful look at one of Canada's best-known artists. Emily Carr: An Introduction to Her Life and Art will lead you to the West Coast, where Carr spent much of her life in a world of richly drawn First Nations villages and totems, dark, haunting forests, wild beaches and vast skies. There, you will meet the unconventional woman -- "the little old lady on the edge of nowhere," as she called herself -- who helped define the face of Canadian art.

This is the second book about Emily Carr that I have read. I also read her book, Klee Wyck. This book is a very good telling of her life and troubles. And it does it very directly. It is a short book but covers the subject well. There are many very good illustrations of her work included.
Jonariara
A lovely book showing the paintings of this remarkable artist. Color is well done and pictures are very good, could be framed and the story of their production is most interesting.

I wanted a more in depth book with better reproductions.

The text illuminates the plates and presents an excellent account of her life. It is written in the Emily Carr tradition of "presenting essentials only, discarding everything of minor importance". Emily Carr as artist is outstanding, and her life is just as remarkable. The author describes her childhood in Victoria, British Columbia, and how she gradually found her artistic niche, primarily of nature and of the Native peoples of her area. Good choice of paintings to illustrate the author's analysis. Irma Jean Crouch, Saratoga, CA
