Avril Hart is an expert in historical dress.

Avril Hart is an expert in historical dress. Her published work includes Englishmen's Fashionable Dress: 1600-1799, Ties, and Fans. Susan North is Curator, Department of Furniture, Textiles and Fashion, at the V&A. This book offers high resolution pictures of sleeves cuffs and embroidery from the 17th and 18th century, mostly mid to late 18th with the majority of images being of backs and sleeves of ladies gowns and men’s waistcoats and great coats. Not a single pair of breeches in the book which was disappointing but I can overlook. If you have spent any time on Pintrist you will have no doubt come across the photo of the full garment.

Avril Hart, Susan North

Avril Hart, Susan North. This sumptuously illustrated book reveals the decorative seams, exquisite stitching, voluptuous drapery, strict corseting and slashing and stamping that make up the clothing in the V&A's superlative seventeenth and eighteenth-century fashion collection. Using an authoritative text, exquisite colour photography and line drawings of complete garments, the reader is allowed the unique opportunity to look closely at clothing, often too fragile to be on display.

Susan North, Avril Hart. Perfect decorative seams, minute stitching, knife-sharp pleats, and voluptuous drapery-all are here, alongside more unusual techniques such as stamping, pinking, and slashing. Most of these effects cannot be replicated by machine, yet many of today's fashion designers take their inspiration from the past, adapting these details to a more contemporary idiom, and to the realities of modern manufacturing.

Now available from Abrams, this popular book offers a rare, close-up look at the exquisite, labor-intensive details seen in fine historical clothing. Drawing from the Victoria and Albert Museum's world-famous collections, the book contains a gallery of exquisite photographs, accompanied by clear line drawings showing the construction of the complete garment and a text that sets each in the context of its time. This book will appeal to anyone interested in fashion, historical costume, or textile history, from cut and construction to fabric and trimmings.

I only gave it four stars because though the book is wonderful, none of it tells enough or shows enough to call it Fashion in Detail. It should have been titled Details of Fashion, so I would have known more what I was getting. A book by this title should have had details of all kinds of fashion, from royals to yeomen, farmers to footmen, not to mention wigs and shoes, hose, hats, and gloves. I won't send it back but it is disappointingly focused on minutia.
This book is large and beautifully photographed with color closeups of intricate detailing on clothing worn by the noble classes. What it is not, is a good description with photos of the actual clothes. If you want to be closer than you could be in any museum, to the finest hand embroidery, beading, seams, stays, and ruching, this is fabulous. There are line drawings of what the garment looked like similar to the sketch on the back of a modern pattern package. Why give a sketch of the gown, why not a photo of it? If not enough remains to photograph, then show what does remain. i.e. there is a fantastic photo of a forest green silk sleeve coiled with ropework, beading, tufting and embroidery, that the book hints might have been worn by Elizabeth I. Love the closeup, but show me the sleeve, please. How was it worn? Did it fit loosely or tightly? Fastened by pins or tapes?
The book is useful and beautiful, interesting, but simply falls short of what I thought I was buying. Even the "look inside" feature is completely misleading; you do not get the feeling from looking at that, that you will not actually see a single garment in this book, just closeups of fancy work.

In Detail being the key word. That is not what this book is about, this is to show you the layering of trimmings, fabric and stitching. I recommend this for a coffee table book for those interested in historical fashion or a valuable tool for anyone striving for historical accuracy in reproducing garments. I make historical reproductions and this is the best thing aside from actually going to the museum and holding the dress in my hands.

I'm using the up-close detailed images in this book to create a costume for the Revolutionary War era. This book provides absolutely gorgeous full color images of detailed embroidery designs, trims, seams, closures, etc. It only provides drawing outlines of the full garment in most cases, however if you're using a pattern, then you don't need a full image. But if it's the details you're after for true re-creations, this is it. I found numerous period garments to choose different designs from for both men and women to include undergarments, shoes, and accessories.

This is a beautiful book. The quality of the photography, and the full page pictures are great. If they had zoomed in any closer you would see what it was like to be inside an individual stitch. The descriptions are short and simple. There are some diagrams done in line drawing about draping and pleating. It looses a star only because they didn't include a single zoomed out picture of any of the items. Imagine trying to get an idea of what a person looks like from head to toe, and the only thing you have to go on is a zoomed in color photo of one of their eyes and a line drawing of their frame. It is still a fabulous book. Certainly worth every penny!

The historical detail of pieces from the Victoria and Albert Museum costume collections is incredible. The photography does justice to the intricate embellishment and contemporary textiles.

The only things missing are diagrams of the patterns from the various items represented, but the line drawings are precise enough to provide plenty of information on pattern and construction.

With only a couple of editorial errors, the writing is interesting and informative, adding to the detail of the photography and line drawings. This book and it's companion, Dress In Detail (also from V&A Publications), are a good combination to add to a costume or fashion library.

I almost always buy anything on costuming from the V&A, they never disappoint. Line drawings of garments explanations and close ups of the garment trims. Anyone who is interested in costume will find a place for this one. Just thinking of the hours that some poor person was sitting by dim candle light and creating these things of beauty, many should have been termed artist. For there are things of great beauty here.

I purchased this book to see more examples of dress from the time period. I was very satisfied with the pictures it shows of the clothing. It shows a pencil drawing of the entire garment and then there is a colored photo of certain details on an actual garment from the period. In the pictures you can even seee some of the hand stitching. Many of the dresses are very detailed with embroidery which of course someone must have taken forever to stitch on. The garments are beautiful examples to look at for anyone interested in this time period.
Had previously bought a couple of other books from the same publisher, also from Victoria and Albert Museum, I liked it a lot, it gives you a real close up view of what the detail of the dress is, and it is exciting to see how well made things are.The wonderful look that reveals why it is costume and fashion. Attention to detail and fine quality workmanship is appreciated.
