Like the exhibition it is for the most part limited to the first nine years of the institution, the period during which Gropius was director. That exhibition was Bauhaus: 1919–1928, an expansive survey dedicated to this incomparably influential German school of art and design. On display were nearly 700 examples of the school’s output, including works of textile, glass, wood, canvas, metal, and paper.

Herbert Bayer studied at the Bauhaus from 1921, first on the Foundation Course in Art and Design under Johannes Itten and then painting under Wassily Kandinsky and László Moholy-Nagy. During this time he was developing his own typefaces.
